Wikipedia, the only real source of fact that we can readily identify, says this of the Tree symbol. (BTW, there is a sycamore on my block and the accursed leaves are one of the most annoying parts of fall/winter. I do believe God created the tree because he/it/she had a sense of humor.)
Early on in the school's history, the athletes were referred to as the "Fighting Teachers" (one of the school's early names was "Indiana State Teachers College"), until the students chose the name "Sycamores", due to the abundance of sycamore trees in Indiana and especially in the Wabash River Valley; though it is believed that the students voted on 'Sycamores' on a lark, never thinking it would win. During the 1950s and 1960s, the sycamore tree itself was used as Indiana State's mascot.
However, as a tree does not lend itself well to an athletic mascot, especially considering Indiana State's in-state rivalries with the Ball State Cardinals and Butler Bulldogs, the university created an Indian mascot named "Chief Quabachi", and his "Princess", in 1969.[3] This change paid homage to the fact that ISU was the "State" university of a state named after Indians (prior to statehood Indiana was primarily inhabited by Indians). The university dropped the "Chief Quabachi" mascot in 1989 in response to a variety of objections over use of the Indian caricature[4] and did not have another mascot until 1995, when a blue-and-white gender neutral woodland creature named "Sycamore Sam" became Indiana State's mascot.[5]

Horned Frog mascot evidently dates back to the late 1890s. I can't find a specific reason why TCU adopted it as a mascot, other than the lizard itself is somewhat peculiar and connected to that part of Texas. It is apparently the official reptile of the state of Texas.
I know every state needs its own reptile.

Ever stood near a sycamore tree during an "Indian Summer Day" in October and smelled the fragrance? Here's a quote that pretty much sums up the Syc fans:
"If athletics are supposed to be the front porch of the university, then Pres. Curtis just took a shit in a paper bag, lit it on fire, and left it on the porch for us to stomp out." - Alum from Dallas/Ft Worth.
And the feature story in the TH Tribstar had this photo to accompany the story. How Patriotic...and pathetic:
Nothing like rewarding your fan base...w/ only 2 games to win before punching the ticket to Omaha. And forget about recruits...

To be fair, the S.O. games have been going on for 50 years. It was reasonable to assume some things there and, if we are honest, it wasn't a done deal that (a.) T-H would get a regional or win one and (b.) that third-ranked Arky would poop all over its shoes. The whole of this conspired to make ISU look bad, but if we are objective, they did the only thing that made sense. It's just easy to bash the AD and Prez. The Sycs will be the home team and it's not ballparks that win games, it's players. UE was only down 2-0 in the 9th inning before they lost the rubber game.

LOL - "...not ballparks that win games." Not all "secrets of the trade" are discussed @ the pre-game "Ground Rules" plate conference! You ever played in ballparks w/ design variances (fence design, turf, changing wind patterns, etc.)? I think ISU LFer Adam Pottinger has already proved this point in the MVC & Regional in TH.
Btw, IU is history now. Only squad now carrying the flag of the Hoosier State.

If anything, it's probably the lights that matter most to an outfielder. I know they had a lot of trouble in Salukiville.

Sounds like a decision made by those at the executive level that did not have enough passion for Sycamore baseball. To be fair, a college president has a lot on their plate and it is hard to be passionate about everything at the U. But they need to be self aware and realize this weakness by putting more thought into the decision and not allowing group-think to occur.
What could of been done before a decision was finalized? Bring in some voices to represent the players, coaches and fan base before a decision was made. Talk with the tourism office, volunteers, hotels, etc and see if there was any solution to the problem at hand. Consult the people in "blue jeans" that don't sit in the corner office. Be creative...I mean campus living quarters were good enough for the UK regional, why can't the ISU dorms be utilized?
Not enough volunteers?? Cmon...if asked, people will rise up to the occasion for the right cause.

If I am also being fair to the people who criticized this, it's not as if in the first of May they didn't realize that this team had some horsepower. If they were waiting to see if they could pull it off -- even the AD had to be thinking fairly far ahead when he lobbied for the regional. Dunno ... were they expecting thousands of people to come in from DFW?

The TCU stats, taken apart from everything else, are pretty impressive. This is one ba-dass batting order, looking only at stats in a very strong conference. Brayden Taylor has some glittery numbers. Trying to determine who they will throw in the first game -- no clue. They seem to have some fairly solid rotation depth. gofrogs.com/sports/baseball/statsThe Treehugger stats are here: gosycamores.com/sports/baseball/stats

"...they decided to give back in the hopes of trying to help Indiana State make up the loss."
LOL - Well, they're sure not FISCAL ANALYSTS!

They love to steal bases...139-158 SB attempts. I believe the Sycs catcher is pretty good at throwing guys out, so this will be an interesting part of the game to watch.
Pitching looks like TCU's only weakness...if we can call it that. How dialed in will the trio of Fenlong, Jachec and Miller be in their starts? They were not extended in the Regional and will have plenty of rest.
Rotation Horned Frogs used in the Regional - Kole Klecker 4.04 ERA, Sam Stoutenborough 4.31, and Cam Brown 5.25
I am sure they would love to have a some Pom Pom Mom's in the crowd this weekend.

Lupton Stadium at TCU ... the Southern programs seem to have no shortage of cash for infrastructure.

Of course, Miller would be long relief after they win the first game. If you have to use Miller long relief, there are other options that might be better. Dunno -- ERA is tricky with college ball since the walk rate is much higher.
