I was a senior that year and they were fun to watch. I was fortunate that I was a student during 3 national championships (64, 65, 71) and went to all the games with my parents during the previous two. I saw a lot of terrific ball players back then who could kick a lot of butts today.

Great article. I was in grade school when the Aces won the 1971 Championship. The team started slow but late in the year caught fire and never looked back. Wellemeyer was certainly a bull in going to the basket, and Don Buse could shut down any guard in the country. It was interesting to know just how much interest Wellemeyer had from many great colleges when he graduated from high school...those are very special memories of Evansville basketball.

I am an avid reader of this forum but this is my first post. It simply boggles my mind that so many of the posters are naive enough to believe that 1) DeAndre’s back is injured and 2) That DeAndre is ever going to play in an Aces uniform again. Write this down—he will transfer to a P5 school and Walter will probably try to ride with him to get an assistant coaching position at the P5. I wish that this wasn’t the case but DeAndre is as good as gone. We all need to accept it and stop dreaming that he will return to play for the Aces.

So if your vision is true DeAndre will have to sit out next year, then only have 1 year of eligibility left. And no school in there right mind will hire Walter next year as an Assistant Coach. He has a BIG X on his back,do to a Title 9 infraction.

I am not sure if DeAndre would be eligible to be a medical redshirt. If my understanding is correct, he would have to have played less than three games or less than 80% of the games to be granted that status. If that is true, I am not sure why he would want to lose another year of college eligibility when he has never even played a complete year. The idea of Walter following DeAndre to another school seems a bit far fetched to me...who would want to take his baggage at this point? Deandre certainly does not need him to move on if that is what he wanted to do. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Much of Deandre's decision, I imagine, will be on how he feels about Coach Lick. If Deandre wants to forgo college all together, he can do that too and just sign with a professional team overseas. But does he really want to do that? Unless I am just not getting it, and maybe I am not, I don't see anything as a forgone conclusion as of yet.

Curious, is D-Will practicing/scrimmaging or doing cardio to maintain any degree of fitness/stamina? With "closed" practices, these things are rarely discussed.

Bruce Pearl or Bob Huggins would take DeAndre along with Walter's baggage in a heartbeat. Probably many other coaches could also get away with it. They will say that they "believe in second chances", blah, blah, blah. P5 teams know how good DeAndre is and will sell their soul to get him.

Where do these wild conspiracy theories come from? You are arguing that DeAndre has been faking an injury for the entire MVC season? Which may include having radiologists and orthopedic doctors, not to mention the coaching staff in on the conspiracy? If he wants to transfer next year, what advantage would there be to not playing now? He would have to sit out next year either way. His injury and the possibility of leaving the program have nothing to do with each other. Players want to play. And what evidence is there that he is not injured? I mean, it has been a bizarre season for sure, but if you want to talk about naïveté, falling for these kinds of conspiracy theories would definitely qualify.

After only one post, Sir Whiskers believes you when you admit to having a simply boggled mind. That said, your forensic ability to diagnose fake injuries from afar is quite impressive. Do you have any boggled insight into why he is still attending classes at UE with his fake injury instead of practicing with Duke?

Unless there is already a deal, which would be some serious tampering, I can't see how prolonging a back injury is going to drive up interest from a P5. Seems the longer it goes on, it would raise questions about what underlying condition could be present.
In regards to McCarty, his legal entanglements appear to be far from over. No one, regardless of how slimy they are, is going to want to bring him on board with that much still hanging over his head.

Remember that DeAndre is at least 22, maybe 23 years old. He’ll have to sit out if he transfers. The likeliness of this happening is very low. If he wants a chance to play in the NBA, he should just stay here.
Also, the likeliness of Walter coaching again anytime soon is very low. The lawsuit could take months, and more lawsuits could follow because this wasn’t just a one time event.

Considering the game is on Fox Midwest today in addition to ESPN3 he would want to play for the exposure.

1. If he is faking an injury more power to him. It doesn't help him one way or another. I choose to believe a statement I received from a very reliable inside source he is indeed injured. 2. I can fathom him not playing another minute this season because of said injury. Why not try for a medical redshirt if he's in a grey area of NCAA rules. 3. If he decides to transfer more power to him. This program and fan base has seen it before. Some will be butt hurt over it. We'll cuss and discuss it. I'll wish him well like RT and DS and then move on.
