For all of us who are attending, it is a orange out game. Leave the purple @ home and wear orange GO ACES

Is big boy playing tomorrow? I like to call him "big dawg" ala Purdue's Glenn Robinson several years back.

Chocolate Thunder would fit too once he gains a little weight.

To me, he's "The Wild One" ... the Wild One in purple!

There was a baseball pitcher they called The Bird. He was more of a flake but his style was as wild as could be. Mark “The Bird” Fydrick. Maybe we can work something off of that. Lol

I recall the '69-70 Purdue squad that finished runnerup to Iowa in the Big Ten. They were loaded w/ Mount, Weatherford, Ford & 6'8" C Bill Franklin (who was also nicknamed the "Big Dawg"). Well, in December they met up w/ St. Bonaventure who had a 6'11" boy named BOB LANIER (nicknamed the "Big Cat"). As the story goes, "Big Dawg" spouted to the media that he was gonna "eat up" the "Big Cat." Well, Lanier let his actions do his talking, as he & the Bonnies devoured the Boilers in MSG in front of 16,000, 91-75. The next season the Boilers returned their starting lineup w/o Mount, and lost for the 1st time ever against ISU in Mackey Arena. I was there.

I’m thinking it was John Wellemeyer that threw up the long shot at the buzzer. It had no chance of going in but Bill Franklin was called for goal-tending.

Any idea what year that was? Was it a reg season or exhibition game? I went thru the PU records & couldn't find it.
Wasn't Wellemeyer on that '71 NCAA Champ squad w/ Buse?
I recall John in HS, as Castle played in the SIAC "B Division" w/ Jasper, H-burg, Tell City, Boonville, Princeton, Rockport, Mt. Vernon. Wellemeyer could've been a 3-sport star @ EC (FB, BB & BA). He was THAT good! I'll never forget while playing CF for Castle as a soph in a game @ then rundown League Field. He corked a HR in RCF that must've went 100'
beyond the fence off our ace knuckleballer, KEITH BRUMLEY (who played FB/QB for Kansas State).
In FB Wellemeyer was a punishing FB...6'3" 220...any college's dream in the backfield. Our coaches called him a "Hoss"...after Bonanza's "Hoss Cartright."

It was a regular season game. Thinking it was the 70-71 season.

The Aces' win over Purdue on the controversial goal tending call was in Dec., 1969. It was the week before Purdue lost to St. Bonaventure. Also, in that 1970-71 season when they won at PU, ISU blew the Aces out in Terre Haute, but the Aces returned the favor in Roberts Stadium in the final regular season home game, on the way to winning the NCAA.

John Wellemeyer was a junior, Don Buse a sophomore, when they upset Purdue. Unfortunately, they ended up with a losing season. Sounds familiar, a huge upset, but a disappointing season overall. And then, Wellemeyer was a senior, Buse a junior, on the '71 championship team. Jerry Birge on Channel 7, called Wellemeyer and Buse, "The Dubois County duo." Great times!
