Huge pickup for the women IMO. Seems like someone who could be a program cornerstone for the next 4 years.

Great first pickup. Can’t teach size.
Now, the team could definitely use some more guards. I hope Newman does better with a faster pace. It sounds like players will get tired easily if they are going to push push push every defensive rebound and steal, so they definitely need more depth.

Love this pickup for us. We've lacked a "true" post player since ruffing took over honestly. I can see from just a glance that she has international competition experience..Netherlands has been producing some serious players on the wbb side the last few years. Exciting get, but won't expect to see any more until the dead period (no contact with recruits allowed) is over. Silly of them to have a dead period after the insanely long dead period they ended 2 weeks ago that lasted almost the whole pandemic where student athletes weren't allowed to take visits, ect..but this is the ncaa we are talking about.
Many times players commit during these dead periods..I suppose distance makes the heart grow fonder..

I think the run-and-gun principle is easily drawn up and discussed, but you need more than just numbers and if you are getting decent talent to come off the bench, you are fairly entrenched in the national spotlight. The Aces have a very long way to go.

I agree this sounds like a great pickup as you can’t teach height and at 6’4” she will easily be the tallest player on the roster. And with four years of eligibility left hopefully she can turn into a solid player and cornerstone of the program. With that said I am not overwhelmed with her limited stats at New Mexico. So I am tempering my optimism and expectations till I see her play. golobos.com/roster/celine-dupont/ In summary she saw 40 minutes of action last year in 10 games. Her stats were: 0 points and 1 rebound, 1 assist, 2 turnovers, 1 steal and 3 fouls. She was 0-11 from the field which included 0-8 from three. 0 attempts at the free throw line as well. So again you can’t teach height and I’m sure she will improve but I want to see her on the court first before getting my expectations too high.

DuPont's 2019 numbers suggest she can be at least average, though it's hard to tell the quality of competition. If she's that tall, the game may have been taken to her. That doesn't work quite as well when everyone around you is aware of that strategy.
A lot of this depends on coaching, training and her ability to adapt to the school and the program. New Mexico is not in a major league. The Valley is likely better overall.
Her bio says her father played some ball, which is usually a nice component because some fundamentals often come with that pedigree.

If I'm going to be honest, I think we've run off some better point guards in favor of newman that we shouldn't have. I really think makayla wallace was a better all around pg and I liked what I saw of Erin dumas in the very short amount of minutes she played. Newman can't do many things that undersized pgs need to be able to do. I've never seen a player drive for so many layups and get blocked. Every. Time. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see coach RSW and buss bring in a PG for this next season.

I trust your opinion heavensvilleace as I’m sure that you have followed the women’s program closer than I have. However, not sure that either of those two point guards have tore it up since they left UE.
1. Mikayla Wallace I believe was the boyfriend of a former men’s player who transferred but won’t mention by name. However, she transferred to North Dakota State, who had a worse record than UE at 2-19; now that is tough to do.
2. Not sure where Erin Dumas turned up at after her stint at Evansville but I believe that she went to Montverde high school in the Chicago area which are known for their basketball talent.

Yes makayla only played in a few games for her new team and tore her ACL. Then the coach was fired. But to be honest 2 years ago evansville wbb was the very last team in rpi all of D1 so amy destination would have been an upgrade. Erin was on our squad this season as a true freshman and he barely gave her seconds on the court so she left at semester.. she hasn't even probably found a new team yet..possibly see her going juco or something with so many in the portal and she has virtually no film

I was very disappointed in her play for the most part after seeing her stats at North.

Even for the women the college game is much faster than HS and they play smarter. Women’s college guards are taller and stronger just like on the men’s side.
After watching several women’s games last year it became apparent that the Lady Aces needed significant upgrades. The returning 7 are just that. Returning players. I am not trying to disparage any of them as they have represented UE to the best of their abilities, but the Valley have some very good players and teams. Coach needs to fill the roster with these same type of players. This one is a good start and answers the need for a dedicated center. Let’s see who’s the next gift under the tree.

I have to agree with heaven. Erin Dumas had a lot of talent and Ruffing didn’t make the most of it. She could handle the ball. I’ve also seen Anna have some real good games so her talent is there. I think Rylee Stevens will rise to the top.

Certainly, results proved that Ruffing either had the wrong plan, the wrong players or the innate ability to draw ineptitude to himself. But I also think players who are good enough to play will get their minutes simply because the aura of the team will demand it.
So while a player or two might have left the program because their playing time was less than they wanted, I'd rather put that on their backs than the coach's.
I do think the mission of a women's BB team in the mid-majors level should be a little easier to identify. The goal is to get a university education for the vast vast vast majority of these women. Even if they plan to make a career inside their sport, their objective should be that first. There is no WNBA career for them.
That may sound like a double standard since we usually expect more of the men. In truth, we don't expect more of the men. They expect it of themselves. We just bought the big con game about "the Dance."
UE has a unique opportunity now to build a model for mid-major women's basketball. The trick is to identify the rainbow and not be too terribly concerned about locating a pot of gold.

Anna definitely is a solid player..but imo (feel free to disagree, I dont hate other opinions) ideally probably a backup pg since she doesn't have the ability to consistently score on any of the three levels and when she gets tired she turns the ball over with a fury. Most of the top performances of hers seemed to be against non D1 comp, but were enjoyable to see nonetheless. The players I think will do well in the coaches system are rylie, abby, and aniah..but abby is going to have to get into better shape..but I'm sure our coaches will definitely address conditioning. I also wouldn't be surprised to see players we didn't know could do anything except cheer on the bench do some impressive things
