I overstated the 70 percent so hopefully this will explain it.
That is not going to happen to any mid-major program that schedules good non-con opponents, though you could go 13-5 inside the conference most years and sustain something near that percentage.
Having a crappy women's program is bothersome to the AD, but if you aren't gonna win, do it on the cheap. UE doesn't care about this problem, but the whole financial mess has forced them to look at everything. The people who claim we spend too much on sports can point to the WBB failure and easily advocate for dashing it against the rocks.
Title IX says no to that, but ... hey, here's a solution ... let's fire the coach because he is paid a lot of money to lose. To fit this inside the frame, I don't care a whit about Ruffing -- who obviously isn't doing a good job -- and I hope UE improves its women's program. I doubt they will make much more than a hand-puppet attempt at that.

Random tidbits in regards to the women's program. 1. Who was coach between Cullop and Oties Epps? Looks like a 3 year gap. 2. I had forgotten about 7th grader Katlyn Gilbert committing to UE under Epps. What could have been...in high school, she went on to earn McDonalds All-American and is currently playing for Notre Dame. www.indystar.com/story/sports/high-school/2014/05/16/why-did-7th-grader-commit-to-evansville-so-young/9169633/3. I have been on record supporting a female for the next hire, but Matt Bollant could be worth a hard look. He was an assistant here with Kathi Bennett in the late 90's, followed her to IU, then started his head coaching career. In 5 seasons at Bryan, he was 134-36 and 90-14 in conference. He then went to Green Bay where in 5 seasons he was 148-19 (.886) and 85-5 (.944) in the Horizon League. Simply a rock star for his first 10 seasons as a head coach. From GB, he got the HC in Champaign at UI. His streak ran out, where in another 5 seasons, he was 61-94 and 22-62 in the Big 10. He has completed two seasons at Eastern Illinois. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matt_Bollant4. If we are going to look at poaching OVC coaches, another one would be Kevin McMillan at UT-Martin. In 12 seasons, he has compiled a 218-132 (.632) record. Not bad at all, but as important, he compares to Barry Hinson in terms of personality. I think this guy would be very visible in our market. You may recall during a press conference at the last OVC Tournament in Nashville, McMillan held up a copy of that mornings Nashville newspaper and went page by page looking for an article on the tournament. It was hilarious, and clearly made the point that the Nashville media didn't care. He may have been somewhat responsible for the tournament moving here.

Could also have to do with when contracts were signed/expire. Assuming it is a 365 contract the other assistants may have re-upped after last year. Tyra, if I remember, was hired over the summer. You could totally be right but I think there could be some other reasons for her being the only one left.

I believe Epps took over for Cullop,as the 7th grader goes she didn't commit to UE,Epps just offered her a scholarship. As for Buss becoming the new coach,I believe its hers if she wants it.

I believed Epps took over for Cullop as well, but I confirmed by simple google searches that Cullop left after the 2007-08 season, and Epps was hired in May of 2011. As I clearly stated, there appears to be a 3 year gap. I asked who it was? Apparently there was someone else. If you had bothered to look at the link I provided, the 7th grader, Katlyn Gilbert, did in fact make a verbal commitment to UE. It is in the Indy Star headline, as well as stated in the first paragraph. It also goes into detail how her parents wanted the pressures of recruitment off of her shoulders for her high school years. Quite a bit more than just Epps offered her a scholarship. As for Buss, you actually may be correct on that one. Time will tell.

go purple aces.com lists Misty Murphy as Coach between Cullop and Epps Thanks, my mind would have never pulled that one out. I remember her now that you mention her name. She resigned in after the 2010-11 season. 27-67 overall, but she did win the MVC Tournament in '09 as the 9th seed.

All the fingers point to Tyra. She was brought in for a reason. I do not think she would have taken this job to be an assistant here for multiple years. We need a women's coach for the women's team. As someone said we do not have a women's head coach at UE so if this is really true which I think it may be, it looks good and makes sense. She is our best option, knows the area, people know her from all around the Midwest, she knows the programs pros and cons, we can afford her "without spending money on any national search" which we do not have the money to spend anyway and lets give her 5 years. If she turns things around and we can't afford to keep her fine, she gets a bigger job and we have better list of candidates to choose from to take over a program on a high note unlike where it is now. When Kathy Bennett got us to that level, we picked up a solid coach in Trish after that and she did a solid job, far better job than Epps, Murphy or Ruffing that is for sure. She did not want to leave, but we could not afford her as she got a nice raise going to Toledo.
Glad Spencer finally made the change. Ruffing was here one year too long, maybe some might say four or five years too long. Marty was here too long as well. Time to make some moves and get back to respectability.
Go Aces !

The biggest knock against Buss is her age. I think she's 24-ish. She clearly has the pedigree, knowledge, etc., but a lot goes in to being a college head coach.
Here's a name of someone who has what Tyra has. . . plus experience. . . . FahKara Malone. She's local. Played at Purdue. Has coached WBB for many years.

UE could do this properly but it isn't likely they will. Administrations are oddly numb to what the fans want in their athletics programs. Instead, they rely on the generosity of private donors to make those decisions for them. It's why they name baseball fields after people who just like baseball well enough to support construction of a grandstand.
Honestly, and I am dead serious about this -- does ANY-body actually CARE if Tyra Buss is too young to be a successful WBB coach at a mid-major university that might (((might))) get a 13 seed in the NCAA regional someday? Are we seriously wondering if the women's Aces win 7 games next year or 14?
If UE hires Tyra Buss, a couple of things will happen -- all of it good. In five years, after she's earning too much money, she will be replaced. For 18 minutes, it will be a big deal.
At least 5 decent players would show up at UE next year if Buss is hired. They might actually even get some coverage on the back of an envelope that was mailed to the local media. The Aces would be competitive enough to win half their games.
Or we could, as I expect we will, hire another balding white guy.
