I’m for Tyra getting the job but in a perfect world it would be Lickliter. Two birds, one stone.

I hate seeing people lose their jobs as it affects individuals, families and others. However, we are long past a needed change in the UE women’s basketball program.
The record shows that Ruffing was not getting the job done and that was not fair to the athletes, the fans and most of all UE. Hopefully the next hire will right the sinking ship. While I have only started following the program this year, I have been critical of the coaching and the quality of athletes. I expect that over the next couple of years we will see if one or both is the reason for the poor showing.
I am anxiously awaiting the announcement of the new HC and what staff and personnel changes may occur. Recruiting will be a keynote as to what to expect over the next couple of years.
Changes, they are acoming and I hope for the better.

Looked on the women’s basketball roster and looks like they get rid of the two assistant coaches as well. Tyra is still listed tho as well as two others.

I just doubled down on Tyra Buss as the new women’s Head Basketball Coach.

If the heart and soul of the program depends on tactics, that's dependent on the type of players you get. If the new coach has the aptitude for recruiting, the tactics should fall into place. I reassert, the players you try to recruit in the Valley are not all-Americans, they are players who have the ability to improve their skills, stamina and willingness to adapt. This is not Baylor.

I don’t mean to throw water on anyone’s hopes and expectations but Carson Harris was retained on the website until Walter was on board then he was let go. I’m not saying this will happen now. I’d like to see her elevated with some strong assistants.
On a side note, my daughter and I were talking about women’s coaches getting the axe. She was saying that Versip at Purdue is skating on thin ice. She’s had success at both high and mid majors.

I merged the two Ruffing (or Ruffian - lol) threads together.

I suspect the removal of some coaches relates to the amount of time they've been on staff and how much it will cost to keep them, as opposed to just "we want to change the culture with a fresh face" who will cost half as much and demand even less, since the new hires are "thankful to have this amazing opportunity."
It is easy for administrations to point to a lack of success when they they never truly have defined the requirement for meeting it. In WBB, about 10 programs will compete past the 2nd round and that is the same 10 as every other year. If you are not in that 10, you get to coach until your contract renewal is on the table.
Then they bag you and start all over. In Ruffing's case, the failure was obvious but even if he'd won 70 percent of his games, they would still be looking at "moving in a new direction."

Spencer has had a LONG time to think about this hire. The fact that they announced a national search makes it sound less likely it will be an internal hire. On the other hand, this could be a "national search" for optics. Unless I missed it, the press release did not say they had hired a search firm. A "national search" that Spencer is conducting himself may look mostly at regioanl candidates. After a few years of this I expect he has known for a while what he wants to do and who his top candidate, or 2-3 candidates are.
It is not unusual to retain a staff member or two after a coach is shown the door - for administrative purposes and to have someone to relate to team members. I would not necessarily read too much into Tyra still being on staff. On the other hand -- she is the coach they chose to keep around. I guess we will find out, hopefully before long.

I agree with you - I think they are saying "National Search" just for optics. Remember the "national search" for the McCarty hire gave us three candidates from Evansville Harrison High School.

'National' search is obligatory now, just like 'diversity' is a necessary word. UE will get 2,500 applications from every high school, juco and D-3 program, plus many who are 3rd on the bench at Stanford. They will announce their hire long before they had a chance to review a fraction of the 2,500 applications. Nobody will be flown in from anywhere and shown the facilities.

It's about Jean and Jo.

As far as I know, in my limited interactions/observations of Ruffing, he seemed to be a good guy. Good attitude. But in the end, the W's didn't come. I think a lot of people wish him well. I do.

...In Ruffing's case, the failure was obvious but even if he'd won 70 percent of his games, they would still be looking at "moving in a new direction." Yes the failure was obvious (because of his record); however, I cannot agree with the second part of the statement. However, I would guess that you are trying to say that people are not going to be happy unless they have a perennial winner that is in the championship every year. Anything short of this and people want a new direction. Jim Crews winning percentage was 58.4% at UE and Marty’s percentage was 51.3% (albeit against weak competition) and both were asked to leave at some point (or at least there was some disgruntlement in the fan base). But a 70% record (especially on the women’s side) that means to me that we are at least occasionally getting to the big dance. But yes, some people would still not be happy.
