What will matter eventually at UE and other programs is that either the coach adapts to his players or he gets players who will adapt to his system.
Lickliter isn't going to be at UE for very long. Two more years, tops. So ... does he recruit guys who might turn the Aces into a .500 team that really gets no better, or does he get guys who will help the next coach, who might prefer somebody else?
Getting a new head coach every 3 years tells recruits, coaches and scouts that the administration isn't being too helpful.
To be honest, if I were the UE administration (and this is sheer folly to suggest it) I'd survey the fans and alumni about what sort of team they'd like to see. The easy answer is: One that wins. The harder answer is: One that competes but casts a quality image on the community. I wonder if the administration is even interested in any of that other than now, maybe, "How do we avoid litigation for every damned thing we do?"
We have seen the effects of that, both in how coaches were hired, replaced, who they recruited, what happened to those players and so-on. What we don't know is how many kids decided against UE for all those reasons.
So why did the kids who did choose UE do that? The standard "it's a good fit for me" is easy to accept. I don't see anything that points to a program that makes the standard 10th grader want to circle Evansville as his favorite place to play.
The top players in the city certainly are going elsewhere.
I think hiring the coach with "Tri-State roots" might be a nice sell to the people who advertise at the Ford Center, but honestly -- do any of us actually care?
Hire Marcus Wilson.

Brad Stevens made the leap from Butler to Boston and they've been quite successful. Of course, pro teams are built differently than college teams and clearly different from high school or even academy teams. I think a lot of it comes down to whether the players are confident of their coaching leadership. They will do what they are told within reason at the upper levels. You could even have had Cunliffe play with his back to the rim and he'd do it for awhile but the consequences would be disruptive. Sure, a tough coach can say, "do it my way or hit the highway." You can get away with that once but eventually players are going to reject that and you will end up with a pretty bad program. Maybe it's the old man in me talking here, but the tough coaches are some of the best coaches in the game. Bob Knight is easily a Hall of Fame coach, and they don't come "my way or the highway" more than he does. Simmons had success with that approach for a while, and we're a bad bounce away from him entering his 15th year with the program. As much as you might have hated the guy, you have to give Simmons credit that his team played his system, and he didn't recruit guys that wouldn't. Helped the university's image for sure, although the on-court results were not the best.

I also want Marcus Wilson to be the coach when Lickliter retires. I would suspect, with no knowledge, that Lick tried to get Marcus as an assistant. He's got a good position in St. Louis which I would imagine could only be wooed away by a head coaching position. I like Marcus more everytime I hear him speak.

From what I have gleaned, his departure was uglier than his tenure. But in Knight's case, he also was coach of a Big 10 school with a national reputation. If you plan to coach at Evansville, you don't really have that as a backdrop. All coaches have to establish some rules but if you want to run and gun, you can't have 9 guys like Peace Ilegomath on your roster.

That’s an abomination. I was never asked to release my idea to lesser forums. Hard to believe but they’ve reached a new low.

Im honestly shocked this is even being discussed. A college head coach has to be able to do more than just draw up Xs&Os. Theyre dealing with young men who in many cases are immature which requires a father like fugure to keep these guys focused and in line. And lets be real, trying to get a 17 or 18 year old guy to commit would be borderline impossible.

Will Whiskers get their wish? I actually had a thought about this ridiculous thread when I heard Ziggy say best “person” for the job, instead of best “man”

Make that intro phone call Ziggy! Maybe her boyfriend could get a year of eligibility and play here too.
