I heard it from a very reliable source that the assistants want to offer him but Coach Ragland is not sold and doesn’t want to pull the trigger. I believe if they end up offering he would definitely sign with UE.

I believe we are loaded with guards at this time. The Aces are currently winless in conference play. They won 2 MVC games last year and have won a total of 9 conference games over the last three and a half seasons, a total boosted by the 7 games won with the odd scheduling of 2 years ago when they got to play Valpo and UNI twice at home. They need help at each position. They definitely are not so overloaded with guards that they can afford to pass on a local player who can handle the ball, pass well, shoot well, CAN MAKE FREE THROWS, and is a competitor. He wins. We need more wins. My two cents anyway.

Muni, I get what you're saying about quantity when you refer to the guards. But I'm referring to the quality. The guards who are redshirting are not as good as the guards who are playing, or they most likely would not be redshirting unless for an injury. And those guys playing ahead of them are struggling. So can we afford to pass on a good player who could help the Aces to more wins, and provide some excitement?

I know there’s a freshman adjustment period, but if you’re not good enough to fight for minutes on this team, you’re pretty unlikely to develop into an MVC caliber player imo.

When looking at the future roster, it's possible to say that we have quite a few guards. My question is, how many of them could lead the offense (point guards)? Tanner Cuff (c/o 2025) is listed at a point guard and Chuck Bailey (c/o 2027) is trying to transition into a point guard. I would classify Matus, Logan, Zaveion & Braylon as wing guards.

Apparently Dunham isn't any better than the Guards we are redshirting, if so I have faith in Rags eye on what is a good player and what's not.

From what I’ve seen of Dunham his negatives are that he’s short for a D-1 guard 6’0 tall and likely done growing. He’s not overly athletic (would have trouble creating his own shot at the next level).
Positives are basketball IQ, a very good shooter, and he makes those around him better. Also has a good work ethic.
My opinion is that he would end up being a good offensive player for us but not a great defender. We could do worse but maybe he doesn’t fit Rags system or style? That’s my guess.

That’s my guess. My guess is Rags doesn’t view him as an impact player and is hoping to sign an impact PG in this class. If we fail to sign his big targets, they may likely fall back to Josiah, but you don’t want to offer the local kid, have him commit, and then immediately recruit over him imo.

I agree with the last two posts that they are likely looking for someone taller and with a higher ceiling but could certainly offer if nothing better materializes. He’s definitely a very good player but you can’t teach things like height and I think Rags prefers the taller, bigger guards from what I see. That also allows you to have more flexibility on switches and not have as many glaring mismatches on defense.
He reminds me a lot of Jeff Embrey who played for the Aces as a freshman and sophomore in the 80’s and was 5’10”, quick and was a good shooter. But when Dick Walters told him the incoming JUCO point guard (Tyrone Scott) was going to start over him his junior year (‘83-‘84), he transferred to Southern Indiana for his last two years.

since everyone here is guessing...my opinion is we have 2 or 3 MVC caliber players on the current roster...and Crew's philosophy was to recruit better than what you have...and Dunham today is better than what we have and WOULD start on this team. too many retreads that were not successful elsewhere against lower level competition...for the last 25 years you can count on one hand the number of incoming froshmen who made a major impact.... suggesting a wholesale clearance for 2023-2024

I like high basketball IQ guys. Right now we have guys that don't seem to understand what their options are when they receive the ball, hence they pause, put the ball on the floor and give the defense a chance to catch up.
Dunham is the type of guy Ben McCollum recruits to NW Missouri. Once a screen is set their basketball IQ discerns quickly where the next pass needs to go, with very little hesitation.

To those saying 6'0 is too short to play at the MVC level, Roman Penn is 6'0 and he just kicked UE's butt today, setting a new single game school record for assists with 18. Bowen Born of UNI is having an all MVC caliber season, and is listed as 5'11. How tall is Mehki Lairy? If the kid can play, he can play. If he's not good enough, then so be it. But disqualifying a player for not being any taller than the guys I mentioned is asinine.

I have to agree that size should not be the loan determinant in recruiting a guard. There has been a lot of guards in the NBA over the years who were short.
What should be a focus is how well does he understand and play the game. What personal skills does he have and how do they contribute to the team currently and in the future. Also, since UE is in the MVC, how do these skills relate to being competitive with the other teams.
I have never seen Dunham play so I don’t know how he fits any of the above. I do believe that Rags has seen what he needs to see and has formed his judgments accordingly. Rags is the coach and knows what he wants in recruits to build a team around and a future culture. It’s his team and his decision and that’s the way it should be.
