Fri, Dec 29th @ 6 pm @ Cincinnati | 5:30 Pregame | vs.
| UE (10-2, 1-1) @ Cincinnati (10-2, 1-1) | Game Info | Fri, Dec. 29 | 6 pm CST | Cincinnati, OH | Game Coverage | ESPN+ | Live Stats | WJPS 107.1 | The Varsity Network | Opp Msg Board | Cincinnati msg board|Direct Game thread | Comparison | Resume Comparisons | Bart Torvik | Evan Miya | haslametrics Kenpom: UE (159), Cincinnati (39) NET: UE (92), Cincinnati (42) SOS: UE (200), UC (89)
| In-Game Links | Anthony/CP | Jevin | UE Men's Basketball | Evansville | Home Page | Roster | Schedule | Stats | Cincinnati | Home Page | Roster | Schedule | Stats | Line | Covers.com Odds | Notes | Cincinnati (10-2) is a very balanced team with nine players averaging between 7.5 and 13.8 ppg. They have some serious height. CJ Fredrick (who played at Kentucky and Iowa) is a lights out 3-point shooter at 46.5% from 3 (20-43). 6'5" Newman is a lockdown defender - will be interesting to see who they put him on. Victor Lakhim's (6'11" 240) game looks similar to Ben's (13.8 ppg and 8.5 rpg - I would guess that they would match up. They appear to play the UC brand of in-your-face defense - so there might be opportunities to drive or back cuts - but most everything will likely be contested. They beat UIC 69-58 in their opener. We certainly have our work cut out for us in this game; but you would think if we brought our A game that we would have a fighting chance. But there is very little margin of error to pull off the upset.
UC has six players who stand 6'7 or higher, five of which are significant players, in Simas Lukosius (6'8"), Viktor Lakhin (6'11"), Aziz Bandaogo (7'0"), Jamille Reynolds (6'11"), Ody Oguama (6'10"). This is something the Bearcats utilized in their dominant win over Bryant a week ago where they outrebounded the Bulldogs 57-33.
Dan Skillings Jr (6'6") who averages 11.3 ppg and 6.8 rbg had a breakout game against Stetson with 32 points and 10 rebounds.
Misc notes: UC is loaded with a lot of 4-star recruits (eg. 6-1 Jizzle James, Aziz Bandaago, Simas Lukosius). CJ and Jamille are 3-star recruits. Their coach (after the Stetson game) was talking about tightening up their defense. So sure, that we will get their best shot. SI currently list UC as a bubble NCAA tournament team.
Jamille Reynolds (6'11" 275 Sr) was recently activated and will likely get better and better each game; CJ is healing from a hamstring injury and likely will be more rested/healthy this game; Aziz Bandaago (back) and Simas (shoulder) both did not play last game but are expected to be available versus us.

I've seen Cincinnati play against Xavier and they definitely look beatable. If our guys bring their A game they can compete and beat the Bearcats.

I've seen Cincinnati play against Xavier and they definitely look beatable. If our guys bring their A game they can compete and beat the Bearcats. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I just want us to compete for once !!! We did not compete at BYU. We have not "competed and fought until the end and looked like we belonged" when facing a much higher ranked team since when? Simmons never scheduled any teams like this unless you count the 60 point loss to Duke or whatever it was. I just cannot remember if there was a game vs a really good team like Cincinnati where we competed for 40 minutes, fought tooth and nail unless you count the game at UK. This is the kind of game and effort we need to find a way to have vs Cincinnati and teams in coming years. At some point we are not going to continue to say "it's ok, it was on the road and they were really good." I want people to soon say that about us. Yes, vs OVC teams we can look pretty good, but vs MVC teams and P5 teams, we have not really arrived imho. I love the progress and how things are going for sure, but to really start to look "legitimate" we have to start taking the punches from these good teams and punching them back for 40 minutes. I can live with a big time effort where we lay it out there and get beat by ten points, but not the 30-40 point blowouts. We need to put those kind of games behind us starting next week. Love the progress, but want more Go Aces !

I think the point here seems to be, it's about time to stop settling for moral victories and start getting real ones. The goal has always been to be a team nobody wants to play.

I just watched Cincinnati play Stetson tonight and Cincy won by 8. I was not impressed by Cincy’s size and I believe we will match up with our size and quickness pretty good. One player we have to lock down on is Skillings who got 29 tonight. He does it all.
Different night, different refs but they did let them bang around in the paint so I would hope Toumi will not get two fouls in the first five minutes.
We need to have a good night and maybe they will be thinking about a New Years Eve party and we can slip out with a win.

I also watched the game and thought Stetson was a pretty good team.Hopefully Cincinnati has a lot of fans because we will play some Valley games with some loud crowds. This is a winnable game for us.

Stetson has to be the best 7-6 team in the country
Cincy isn’t all that skilled but, they are physical and playing at home. Gonna be a tough one.

They have now opened up a game thread for our game. Interesting analysis on our team:

Looks like we are 14.7 point underdogs with a 10% chance of winning this game. Very little margin of error for us to pull the upset. I came across this site by Bart Torvik that I liked and will likely add to my pregame posts: barttorvik.com/team.php?team=EvansvilleIf anyone else knows of any sites that show team comparisons at a glance that might be good for the pre-game posts just let me know. Thanks. Note: We are only listed as a favorite in six of our remaining 19 games with us listed as an underdog in the last seven games of the season. So our schedule definitely heats up from here on out. .500 in conference would be a good accomplishment. Note: We are also a 14.7 point underdog against ISU in our next game.

So our schedule definitely heats up from here on out. .500 in conference would be a good accomplishment. Note: We are also a 14.7 point underdog against ISU in our next game. Kenpom does the same thing, but you have to have the paid version to see the stuff you’re seeing on Torvik. After comparing the two, they’re basically the same predictions though. Kenpom says 10% and 14 pt loss and then 13 point loss and 12% chance for ISU. Although we’re only favored in 6 games per their predictions, they predict us too finish 18-13, so the algorithms anticipate we’ll steal two of the close ones. Kenpom actually predicts us to go on a 5 game winning streak from the ISUr game to Murray away game. Both models predict us to lose the remaining games after Murray away. If we’re good enough to win 5 in a row, I would be shocked if we lose 6 in a row to close out the year. The schedule is definitely more challenging down the stretch, but I would be disappointed with anything worse than a 2-4 finish. A 2-4 finish with the other predicted wins would put us at 19 wins in the year. I like us to also win the Missouri State home game we’re predicted to lose in a close one to put us at 20 wins. That might be overly ambitious, but I think it’s definitely something this team is capable of achieving and it would put us in position to maybe avoid Thursday if the MVC tiebreakers go our way.
