If true, that really sucks. And to think pizza boy, Bobe, received a scholarship from Licklighter on his way out the door.
Wow.

I read somewhere that college coaches will start to have 12 scholarships available and always try to keep an open one for late transfer. Seems like a smart plan in today college basketball landscape.

I don't think UE not having a scholarship was not the reason at all. USI DID NOT have a scholarship for him either. I completely agree with what was alluded to earlier, in that Kiyron had established relationships with USI coaching staff years ago. Obviously, he did not know any of the coaching staff at UE since they were just hired. Kiyron also had known several of the players on the Screaming Eagles team as well. It appears fairly certain he left Houston mostly to get closer to his family, and probably for more playing time. Looking back at all what happened here, the reasons seem pretty self evident.

I am not sure exactly what the situation was, but heard rumors when the new coaches came on, they may of been trying to get out of the Gabe Spinelli scholarship offer, since there was no "letter of intent" signed, but they went ahead and honored the verbal commitment. Had that occurred, the scholarship would be available. (again, this may just be a rumor with incomplete info)
I can see coaches using the transfer portal to their advantage by suggesting to a kid that maybe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence. Churn a few of the less skilled players out of the team every year to make room for new recruits/transfers.

Well, Trey Hall was dropped from the roster before Powell committed to USI...unless they are honoring Hall's scholarship to help him finish school, there should have been a scholarship open for Powell.

That's entirely the point. Kiyron was headed to USI regardless. He is listed as a nonscholarship addition. No doubt he will receive a full ride from one of three seniors who will be graduating from the Screaming Eagles next year.

Seeing the reaction to us not getting Isiah Swope had me thinking back to this thread. I will take the W on this thread when a poster claimed Powell would have been our biggest recruit in the last 20 years. This didn’t age well.

Powell definitely didn't turn out to be the ballplayer I thought he would be.He did play behind a BEAST of a rebounder.

He was way overrated out of high school. When Painter watched him in person his recruitment of him pretty much immediately stopped. Does not play hard at times and not a good shooter. Definitely not ‘the best of all time’ type of recruit.

The same Painter who coaches guards who refuse to shoot open ten footers with a chance to get to the second round on the line? That Painter?

Despite being incapable of winning in march, he does historically have an eye for big man talent and he’s more than willing to take guys in the 100-200 national rankings like Kyrion and develop them. Him evaluating and seeing an in state guy like that and deciding he’s a hard pass definitely doesn’t bode well for Kiyron. That said, I think most everyone on this forum still thought he’d be a solid mid major guy. Congrats on nailing this one Evilleintentions. I know I was shocked to see him not see the court this year.

Powell getting a offer from Houston instead of Purdue shows me who has a better eye for talent, and it's not Painter.Sampson took a chance and it didn't pan out.
