Keith Lee's son was recruited to UE by Steve Merfeld. He left the program I believe after or during his freshman year. Had talent, but had a reputation as being a head case.
The point being though, I really don't buy into the fact that Kiyron was not bright enough to go to UE. Fans often get upset when a recruit choses a different program, and tries to justify it by making silly claims. UE is a great academic school for sure, but without naming names we have seen some kids over the years admitted into the program that would make me wonder.

All true; but in general UE has recruited and brought in great student-athletes - there are obviously exceptions. Two of the three players mentioned above were on Walter's watch. It did appear that that we dipped a bit in that regard during Walter's tenure.
Again, in general coaches like Crews, Simmons and (even) TL brought in great kids (sometimes to our detriment athletically).
But yes, there are exceptions. As a UE graduate UE is a great academic school but I would not go overboard; hopefully we are above "average" academically. But by how much I am not sure.
Everything I read, Kiyron is and was a great kid. The comments on the UH message board were overwhelming positive on him as a person (and his ability and potential). Whether that translates to grades, I don't know. But I have no reason to believe that was a limiting factor here; but I could be wrong.

Okay, let’s stay away from the grades assumption. KP’s decision, to me, is no reflection on the job our coaching staff is doing in recruiting. A kid who didn’t get any minutes the previous year and no chance of minutes this year, went to a school that’s in an easier conference at a school that can’t go to the post season. My thought…he’s going so he can play, get buckets and elevate his profile. That isn’t as simple in the MVC. He already went to the dance and experienced a Final Four, so that doesn’t move him anymore.

Alternatively, from an academic perspective, with college credit in high school, summer classes, redshirting and extra COVID year potentially in play, we will see more players looking at graduate programs when transferring. While some players struggle with the academic demands, others seek to maximize their educational opportunities as student athletes. USI offers more programs, including an MBA.

I am sick and tired of this bashing Powell because he didn’t come to UE. He went to USI because he wanted to come home and has friends on their team and I think he entered the transfer portal to facilitate that move. I do not think UE was even in the equation - no fault of the UE coaching staff. Also on the academics issue I know for a fact that he was a very good student at Bosse so back off that as being the reason he did not come to UE. Just wish him well and leave it alone.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda.
IMHO, bleed purple is dead on. You lose out on a local guy that might have helped us. We lost Sisley, who had a great upside, but no UE coach at the time to school bigs. On the other hand, we got new guys from Akron, UNLV, and ALABAMA ST.! So a guy from from the dreaded SWAC might turn out to be a fantastic addition.
We “lost out” to Vandy on Roberts and to UCF on Hart, but at least we punched above our weight, and I have no doubt that Rags and staff will continue to upgrade the roster as the portal continues its gyrations. We are simply going after more guys, who have better talents.
I look forward to this season, and for that matter, the next few years. We may not finish .500 in ‘22-23, but I’m confident we’ll play hard and that Rags will keep the fans informed. The Powell move to USI is a speed bump, only because we don’t know the whole story, and the visuals are nice for USI, instead of UE. BTW, verbal commits lists KP as a “walk-on.” That’ll probably change next year, but USI was in the same spot as UE, in terms of scholarship availability. Who knows, Rags may have someone else he might bring on to fill Trey’s spot.

Their roster is full. He probably is a walk on, but with NIL, I bet he appears in a Romain car dealership commercial that will more than cover his tuition.
Best of luck to him and USI. I’m more than confident he’ll prove all the doubters wrong when we have our first UE USI matchup. Rags and staff have been working on hard on the recruiting trail, and I’m sure we’ll get some positive recruiting news before the years over.

when KP hit the portal, word is he had inquiries and offers from a SEC, ACC, Big East, Big 10 and Pac 12 teams, why he did not accept is curious, perhaps he was homesick, perhaps he knew he was not P5 talent, perhaps he was willing to be happy playing in a lower tier conference. If he was happy, be happy for him. Let it go. BTW, UE did inquire.

My sources said he wanted to be close to home do to some family issues. So that being said I'm done with the Kiyron post

I would like to preface this by saying I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve a waiver. I’m sure he has reasons that absolutely justify it and I’m glad he’s coming back to Evansville….
But WOW that was quick! Four years ago you’d have to fight for months to get a waiver to transfer closer to home even if your parent was dying of cancer… now they hand them out like candy on Halloween. I think the change is absolutely for the better but it sure is a stark difference from the way the NCAA operated just a few years ago

I have nothing specific against this either except it seems like NCAA rules are just mere suggestions now. Wasn't it like May 1st for the so-called deadline on the portal? I think it's the wild wild West out there in collegiate athletics. Are players who took the deadline seriously just suckers, like folks who paid off their $9,000 student loan? I do wish Kiyron success as a local product returning home.

Off subject, but it seems like the right time to ease the tournament eligibility rules for schools like Bellarmine and USI going from D2 to D1.
