I sincerely doubt UE would have passed on KP. But you are right, it is not the end of the world

UE would not just pass on a skilled 6'8" PF who has 3 years of college strength/conditioning, nutrition, and classes under his belt to hold a spot for a possible high school player.

Why though? Again he sat the bench. If he was so good why did he sit the bench? The same reason Matt Painter passed on him after watching him play in person his senior year. No one so far has any verifiable information that UE was pursuing him. From what I can gather they took a pass on him and I’m OK with that.

Sad when you cannot beat out a D2 to D1 transition team for a local talent....not a good day for the program. I sure hope they didn't encourage Trey Hall to leave his BB scholarship to open up a spot for Powell just to get spurned by him. there’s more discussion on the schedule page about this, but I think Ncace was right and the two aren’t connected at all. Treys dismissal from the program has likely been known to the team well before Kiyron announcing his transfer. I’m pretty confident Treys was a result of grades being finalized from the summer session and him not getting it done in the classroom once again. It was just finally announced this week because the roster was going to be announced, so the info could no longer be hidden from the public. No coincidence that Rags statement was released an hour before the team tweeted the official roster. Thanks for the clarification.

He played on a team who went 60-10 the past two seasons, made a Final 4 and another Elite 8, and was loaded with talent. Put him on a mid-major and he would have been a starter.

Serious question, who on the current roster is better? He sat the bench at Houston, so? Realistically can't compare the two teams.

Lol He sat the bench at Houston. Where do you get your information that he is the best recruit in the last 20 years? Again he is not LeBron James or anywhere close to it. Evansville took a pass on him or else he would’ve ended up in an Aces uniform. They would rather save the scholarship for an incoming freshman next year because they have better alternatives. The hyperbole is as thick as thieves in here. 😅😂 This is one of the worst takes I've read here in a while ... He sat the bench on a final four team - are you seriously deriving he wouldn't be one of the best recruits we have had here in the last couple of decades from that? Where does that cockiness come from in the thought we would definitely have gotten him over anyone else? We certainly have not shown that or earned that - we just lost a senior grad transfer and our best scorer to ... UTEP.. He would have certainly been a big impact player for most mid-majors including us (who by the way, were one of the WORST teams in all of division one last year)

We haven’t enough of a sample with these new guys to answer that question. You act like he’s some sort of God though and he’s not. Again if he was he would have played. And when all of this plays out, you can come back to this topic on the forum and apologize to me when I’m proven right. 😂😅

Matt Painter has also passed on every single high school player we would’ve LOVED to sign in the class of ‘23. Matt Painter probably isn’t interested in many MVC caliber players. Kiyron isn’t LeBron James, but he would absolutely be a starter on our roster and would’ve been a big addition. He’d probably be the best big we’ve had in the last decade besides Iggy & Deandre. He might not be a world changing prospect, but he’s the rim protector and rebounder our program has been desperately missing since Iggy left. To claim he’s a pass for the program, considering our current state, is just a ridiculous statement. He is no doubt better than every big on our roster besides maybe Sekou. Losing a hometown kid to your cross town rival in their first year in D1 isn’t a good look. No way to spin it.

I never saw an interview with him posted that even said he was interested in coming to UE. Lots of wishful thinking by posters on this site. I think this is what he planned all along. Do not bash the current staff for “losing” him.

I like Evilleintentions stirring the pot usually, but this honestly might be the most ridiculous statement posted to this board since Whiskers advocated for Tyra Buss as our next head coach lol

No one knows if UE passed on Kiyron.Apparrently he was good enough to have Sampson offer him a scholarship.

For a coach that talks constantly about rebounding and defense, I find it hard to believe he passes on a rebounding shot blocker that’s from the area and would elevate the local perception of the program. Maybe Kiyron was never interested in UE. Maybe he was set on USI from the moment he entered the portal. We’ll never know the details of his recruitment, but we definitely did not pass on him because he rode the bench on a final 4 team so that we could give minutes to a big that rode the bench at Arkansas Little Rock.

Until UE starts performing better it is going to be difficult to sign local players like Powell. That's why the Sisley signing was such a big deal. With the exception of Elkins I can't really think of any Bosse player we have ever signed in recent memory.
It isn't a good look to have USI sign him - but I don't think I'm ready to jump off the cliff either. For this to have happened as quick as it did I imagine there probably were already things in motion.
The bottom line is we have to start having success. If we can start doing that, things will get better with recruting - reputation will improve etc. If we continue stinking up the place it's going to continue to be a struggle.
