A lot of good opinions. I am probably wrong, but it is very possible that Powell simply connected with Isaiah Swope, or vice versa, when he decided to move on from Houston. Swope is an upbeat, friendly guy, who probably helped introduce him around the USI team. Alternatively, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had landed at WKU because of Lander.
Who knows? Maybe UE has kept in touch over the past year, but some on this thread keep up with tweets, and it appears that we had not built a close relationship, for whatever reason. Did he even visit UE in the past week?
If this had been a well-known, intense recruiting contest between UE and USI, I would be very concerned, however, it appears to me that Kiyron was USI’s to lose. He could have gone to ANY OVC, Horizon, Summit, ASUN, CUSA, or MVC school, but he came home to a place that was comfortable for him. He’ll also get a chance to showcase next year, as I expect Gouard will schedule a non-conf. slate similar to Bellarmine’s this year. (And I hope UE follows a similar path.). After all, a mid-major loses nothing by playing Big10, SEC, or other P5 schools away. Take the pay games to help recruiting, build a treasury, and prep for Arch Madness.
He will help USI, and he’s the kind of local recruit that we want and need, no question. He clearly wasn’t a fit for Houston, but he’ll do well in the OVC. UE needs a big win on the recruiting trail. Try harder, Rags and staff. Meanwhile, I hope K is happy and successful at USI.

Not getting Powell changes nothing for me. We have so much more height, speed and athleticism than the past several years plus the style of play with emphasis on rebounding, defense and pace of play is exciting. I can’t wait for the season to start and witness this transformation and beginning of rebirth of Aces basketball

Losing a hometown kid to your cross town rival in their first year in D1 isn’t a good look. No way to spin it. Is there any proof we were all in on him other than the fact Marcus was following him on twitter? Even if we were, there are so many variables involved, to simply dismiss as USI is beating us for recruits is a tad premature. You have to remember, Stan and staff were in place when KP was still at Bosse. Our staff was in Utah, New Mexico and St. Louis at that time. There is probably some familiarity there. As USI becomes a D-1 program, we may end up going after some of the same recruits. As with any recruit, there are all kinds of variables involved in where they go. USI has some appealing factors, but we do as well. If we were still under the Spencer/Lickliter regime, I would be concerned, but both programs appear to have the right staffs in place now for success. Both programs will be fine if successful.

There are so many factors that go into a decision you certainly can’t blame the coaches. Who knows, maybe they know something we don’t and didn’t go all in. Maybe they did and he just had already more established relationships with USI. Im not losing any sleep over it after the great job the staff did with the recruits we have considering what a late start they had. Go Aces!

Some of you can beat me up all you want to, but a lot of what I said will prove to be true. I trust Ragland and this staff. They may have been casually interested but they saw it like I see it. They decided to take a pass and there’s good reason for it.
Some of you in here look at a guys online ratings and think it’s gospel. Some guys get ratings because of who is in their corner promoting them. Lander was a 5 star supposedly. How did that work out? Trey Hall was a 4 star. How did that work out?
Sometimes it’s about fit and culture. Powell fit neither. Someday some of you young guys on here will understand what I mean. For now though, wear your emotions on your sleeve and criticize me. I’m a big boy. I can take it.

Great debate…finally. Houston was a legit team, but what’s happening with them now? Most likely KP left this late because he realized he wasn’t going to get any major minutes. He wants to be the guy with the ball in his hand and scoring. I don’t think he would be that guy for us or in the MVC. OVC allows him to get buckets. USI can’t play in a tournament for years, they’re in a worse conference and most likely would be at the bottom. They’re currently not a better program or have a better situation than UE. And academic’s…getting into UE in a matter of days isn’t an easy task. I’m okay with not having him.

According to some Evansville kids,USI is the fun school,UE is not. This is absolutely true. UEs campus life went down considerably in my 4 years there. The administration hates fun and couldn’t be more out of touch with college students and what they want in their college experience. The administration trying to permanently cancel Bike Race last year should tell you all you need to know… but that is a discussion for a different thread lol

I previously posted that I thought UE should do what it takes to get Kiyron, but either our coaching staff didn’t have the same opinion of him or they were told up front that K had no interest in UE. With that being said I’m not sure he is a big loss for UE.
In just a few months Rags and his staff have shown they can get quality recruits and are currently targeting top tier prospects. You can argue the rating out of HS earned by Kiyron but the fact is that he had very little playing time so far and his future at Houston was a bench warmer. We have seen many HS players out of HS that did not live up to their billing. UE has has a few of their own.
I trust the UE coaches are pursuing the right high quality recruits that will improve the team and will once again compete for championships and post season appearances.

I trust Ragland and the staff. The academic standard is higher at UE than USI. Why could a kid transfer to USI knowing he will never play post season because of Division 1 jump. I tend to believe he wasn’t on the UE radar I wish Powell luck and will probably attend a few USI games to watch him play I do love their arena

We’re also not sure if his academics were up to UE standards.

The only footage that the UE coaches had on Kiyron was his high days 3 and 4 years ago.Like I said before, he was good enough for Sampson to take a chance on him.

We’re also not sure if his academics were up to UE standards. Every indication is that Kiyron did very well in HS and is pretty intelligent. The Houston forum said he was the most eloquently spoken player on their team in interviews. I highly doubt academics kept him out of UE. We haven’t exactly had the brightest players since Walter

DeAndre Williams, Shea Feehan, Keith Lee's son, and some others. Let's not pretend UE won't bend it's academic standards.
