The timing of Hall's departure from the roster and Powell's availability feels like something other than coincidence. I think there's a good shot we land him.

I had all but given up on Trey. I was over the top happy when he first committed, considering all the attention he had received from some excellent programs. But over the course of time, there just seemed to be one obstacle after another. I had no expectations of him ever making the impact I thought he would after last season. He has very involved and good parents and I know he takes his education seriously. I wish him the best and but glad his scholly in now open.

Are we even sure we had a scholarship available?? I say this because I had thought Bobe was on scholarship. I remember that coming up on here. That means before Hall left we had 14 scholarships. So now with Hall gone we have 13 which is the limit. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I’m sure there will be more info coming, as to how and why K chose USI. You don’t ever want to underestimate Stan Gouard’s connections or his recruiting skills. The fact that Swope is at USI and plays substantial minutes could have been a significant factor, too. It’s also possible that the Trey Hall timing just didn’t mesh with K coming on the market. If UE had to conjure up a way to get K on scholarship, that might have been part of it.
Regardless, UE needs to redouble their efforts on the recruiting front. With all due respect to Gehlhausen, we really need a local star like Powell or Lander to reconnect with the city, and really good ones don’t come along every year.
All that said, we have more talent this year, a better coaching staff, and more effort being put forward on the recruiting front. If memory serves, we only have 1 or 2 openings for recruits in 2023 anyway, so we just need to get a couple of really good guys.
Not getting Powell isn’t the end of the world, but the visuals put USI in a positive light, and it would have been huge news if UE had won out….but we didn’t. Move on.

So now with Hall gone we have 13 which is the limit. Please correct me if I am wrong. Bobe gave up his scholarship for Matus, so we still had one available. What’s more concerning, USI has a full scholly roster and still found a way to make it work. I’m trying not to overreact to this news, but I am definitely a little less optimistic after losing our first recruiting battle to our cross town rival

Grand Slam for USI for sure. You never know what some kids are looking for...but KP found what he wanted. UE, under present coaching staff will have their day as well. Rags and his assistants will need about a year establishing their connections. Remember this though: KP is pretzel thin....6'8 207 and played little for a talented Houston team. Could be wrong, but not sure how well he would match up in the MVC as compared to the OVC.

Sad when you cannot beat out a D2 to D1 transition team for a local talent....not a good day for the program. I sure hope they didn't encourage Trey Hall to leave his BB scholarship to open up a spot for Powell just to get spurned by him.

I sure hope they didn't encourage Trey Hall to leave his BB scholarship to open up a spot for Powell just to get spurned by him. there’s more discussion on the schedule page about this, but I think Ncace was right and the two aren’t connected at all. Treys dismissal from the program has likely been known to the team well before Kiyron announcing his transfer. I’m pretty confident Treys was a result of grades being finalized from the summer session and him not getting it done in the classroom once again. It was just finally announced this week because the roster was going to be announced, so the info could no longer be hidden from the public. No coincidence that Rags statement was released an hour before the team tweeted the official roster.

I’m not losing any sleep over this announcement. Some of you guys in here act like Powell is LeBron James or something. He’s ok nothing more nothing less. Work ethic was always an issue. I know I’ll get hammered for saying that but I have it from a reputable source. That’s all I will say.

There was some chatter about Evansville potentially being interested, but I wasn’t able to find anything to confirm those rumors.
From Anthony. I believe this statement to be correct.

This is a huge miss for us - USI got a better recruit than we've had in 20 years in their first year. Not good

Lol He sat the bench at Houston. Where do you get your information that he is the best recruit in the last 20 years? Again he is not LeBron James or anywhere close to it. Evansville took a pass on him or else he would’ve ended up in an Aces uniform. They would rather save the scholarship for an incoming freshman next year because they have better alternatives. The hyperbole is as thick as thieves in here. 😅😂
