I agree! This seems to happen on a lot of the threads - posters are enamored with their knowledge and opinions and go to great lengths to convince. I think I know who you are referring to. db1972? I can't blame you for not being enamored of your knowledge and opinions. It's quite noble and refreshing. Never had one post on this thread before this. Glad to know I'm living rent free in your head.

I think a prospective recruit listens to 2 people -- the one person in his life he trusts the most, and a friend who is playing ball at the school he is considering.
Other than that, if he's reading a fan forum, he's either laughing his ass off or he is wasting time better spent reading a book.
On Preston Phillips. The main thing about any recruit is that they did what I suspect they do in my first paragraph. If those people are talking up the UE program, that is where you want to be. Watching the last few games in the NCAA's, how far does Evansville have to go to compete with those people? Or even consider asking to include them in our schedule? Once upon a time, the Aces would play anybody and get a headline on the outcome.
Let's hope the new players see their role as more than just going where there's no competition for a roster spot. How in blazing hell did Scott Drew recruit that team?

Actually, Preston's mom corrected a bit of info on the following tweet ... "It was actually 11 inches in high school . He grew 6 inches and gained nearly 50 pounds from sophomore to junior year." Wow, that is a definite growth spurt! :-)

Preston Phillips Bosco 2020 - Season Opening TourneyNote: Pay particular attention to the middle of the clip (seconds 26 to 30) and when the opposing big man comes out to guard him and Preston drives right by him - that is reminiscent of some of those Jordan clips. Hudl highlights

Hudl highlightsHe does look good in the edited video. He never misses. But. It is entirely him going 1-on-1. I like it but does it fit the “system?” Many here called it selfish when Cunliffe and Curtis did the same thing. Will Lickliter let him do that in the first 25 seconds of the shot clock? The sanctity of Lickliter’s signature system must be preserved, I’m led to believe. Will the usual suspects turn on him when the losses pile up and they suddenly discover that he misses more often than not? Yes, those are rhetorical questions.

Lickliter would not have recruited him if he did not fit the system.

The kid's got a nice all-around game, likely the byproduct of his 8" HS growth and adaptive positional phases he's transitioned thru. He's going to be a tough match up for any opponent.

I wish I heard more scuttlebutt about the Bosco program. Crown Point is just down the road from me. I know they play some juco teams in NE Illinois and historically, those programs are pretty stable. Roman Penn went there three or four years ago. There are some academic requirements, whatever that entails. This appears to be the 'go-to' method for getting undersized, under-motivated players to build up a touch of maturity so that they can at least go to a university without acting like a dummy.
I think the appeal is that kids can get a running start on college by taking some "Ivy Tech" classes and spending the rest of their time playing basketball. That may be all we expect from the free on-court entertainment that drives this $4 billion industry.

Looks like that darned prep school helped him bulk up - he's not your typical skinny armed UE freshman anymore.

Yeah….it's a video...I get that. But he sure is fun to watch. If anything he seems to have a high skill set. I have commented on him before, but he is an exciting player.

Hudl highlightsYes, Austinace, I totally agree! I saw this video, too. I understand that you can form opinions either way (by what you see or don't see), but I'm taking the optimistic approach to what I'm seeing develop for this upcoming team. Preston seems to really handle the ball, makes some great passes to team mates, and is pretty quick for a big guy. With his size, I don't think you will be pushing him around much in the paint. Also, Troy Boynton impresses me with his aggressiveness, quickness, and slashing ability. Antoine is another big addition to fill the gap we had at the small forward position (Sam left, and Jax was it last year). I can't remember a recent Aces team with so much balance and depth of quick guards, wings, and bigs. We seem to be one of the only MVC teams currently with so many bigs on the roster. And I think Sisley will be another Andy Elkins type of guy for the Aces. He has an incredible future! What's really nice is that he has a "little" brother that is tearing it up in 8th grade right now! Could be we have a Sisley dynasty at UE for quite a while! Hope so! I think this team is the total package, I really do!

Preston looks like the kind of player that a school like UE needs on its roster. At this point he’s not a power conference type of player but he certainly shows a skill level needed at the mid majors. I like his size and athletic ability along with his basketball skills. All to many times a school like UE gets a big player that is lacking in one or more of these skills to be successful. You have to like his potential with good coaching and work ethic.
When you look across the spectrum of this year’s recruiting class. Personally I think it’s exceptional. We have size and skill at the 6-7 to 6-9 height. No skinny minnies here, no two left feet or hands that can’t catch a beach ball. Add who we got to who we already have as underclassmen and we are going to be pretty solid in the paint. No dominating 7-footer but those are rare in the mid majors anyway.
Our guard play is going to be really good. Boynton is going to be the point guard we see on other good teams that we wish we had. Beauchamp is going to be that shooting guard that will be lights out when we need it. His range is a deep three. We have a returning core of guards that will have two or more years of eligibility if they exercise the Covid eligibility. Without injury or other problems there will be no looking down the bench to see who we can put in.
We will not be where we want to go yet, we are certainly walking down the right road. I think the coaching staff has done their job to bring in the right players to move this team forward.

Is this the kid with the skinny arms. HHhahahaahah It sure is and he’s awesome against short defenders with skinnier arms. When was your last eye exam?
