It will be interesting to see if coach will allow a couple of our new guards to create shots or play within the system.Thats why Curtis isn't with us anymore, he was reckless. In a year and a half Lickliter has won a grand total of 9 games with “the system” and the entire starting lineup will be system players. All of the newcomers were handpicked by him to fit into the system. Relax, no one will be “reckless” or exciting to watch. Those players chose other MVC schools.

It is one thing to envision a scrappy, fast-breaking team ripping off rebounds, outlet passing, passing up the 12-footer in favor of the kick-out, draining the 3-ball, dropping back, scatterballing on defense, breaking up the play, all the while raising the heat and energy inside a fieldhouse where the tarps are pulled back and 9,000 purple-clad fans are in an emotional frenzy from opening tip to final horn.
Something like that.
I am slightly more realistic.
There are few reasons to expect a coach to suddenly change. If you get that player, you can upgrade the tempo a little. You can add 4 or 5 points to a game, depending on how you use the metrics. If a guy wants to shoot, he also likely isn't the guy going for the 50-50 ball. His job is to get open, not get the ball.
The truth is, those players are quite rare. Larry Bird is probably the last one-man game changer. That has been many years. If there are players at UE this year who are more reckless and adventuresome, the conference will allow them to do that all they want.
I will say that the new recruits interest me. Interesting because I don't know if they can play D-1 ball. We are told they can. I recall some fans being zealous about the addition of Peace Igelomah.
I think tempering this unbridled enthusiasm is prudent. Hope for a team that has some moving interchangeable parts, so that when your 2-guy gets 3 sh***y fouls in the first half, you can at least hope for a modified game plan. If the game plan doesn't modify, you have bought the rusty half of the bridge.
I have no strong feelings about this coach but I don't like the offense he runs. He runs that offense because believes in it. The players aren't going to argue. If it works, they win. They believe they can win.
I believe they can give it a good try.

I doubt that we will have too many "reckless" players this year, but there will be some that will be exciting to watch. Givance can be very exciting with his ability to spot the open man, or drive to the basket. Newton can be exciting at times with his ability to score against much taller players. Kuhlman can be exciting at times also if he can hit those threes like he did last year. Enaruna has the potential to make some exciting moves under the basket also. If the Aces can hit their shots like they should, I think they will be a quite exciting team this year. That of course, could be a very big if.

You mentioned four players who played last year as ones you expect to be exciting. Of those, only Shamar had a long leash and delivered many thrills. Jawaun was spotty. Iyen had a few spin moves so there is potential if Lickliter will tolerate it. Big if. Evan was straight-up conservative and an overachiever. Evan along with Noah is the system. That doesn't make you wrong, we just have a different definition of excitement. Granted, a high shooting percentage is its own kind of excitement. Maybe the newcomers can bring more of that. We'll see.

Hitting shots is also the product of the defenses they are facing. Most players will hit half their open shots. The problem with any offense is that if the defense can eliminate tendencies, the offense's strengths are reduced. Nobody in recent years has complained that UE's inside game is too much to handle. Our tallest guy last year was Jax Levitch, who liked to stand on the 3-ring. So if there are allusions that more 'exciting' is in our future, anything slightly more versatile than a utility pole would upgrade us there. I hate to be the one to claim this, but Noah Frederking and Evan Kuhlman should not be part of a conversation about how the Aces expect to be better. Those guys are a year older. There's a positive to that and maturity is of some value. Depth for short stretches. I will support whatever they bring and will temper my expectations until I see what these young recruits have to offer. But if they can't push Noah and Evan to the bench, this is not a competitive team in a tough conference.

Chad’s latest CP mailbag: It didn't plow much new turf on the men's side. I did like the insight on the women's program. Seems like if he had to answer a question about who's the most handsome coach, we needed to ask more good questions. I guess the Covid-19 thing belongs in the room where what we see and say here stays here when we leave here. Infections are not declining. NCAA coughing up its authority is a big deal but I don't think we will like the alternatives. Kenneth Roy will be pretty happy to mentor these young men.

An uninspired sked and with the return of Evan and Noah, we are showing a lack of commitment to the future. I hope Trey Hall and Sisley make early claims to big playing time. Shamar and Newton should shine, and that’s good, because they’ll have the ball in their hands a lot. We needed to recruit an inside stud and didn’t. Maybe one will emerge, but it won’t be Evan. Iyen might be the guy, but someone has to step up in the role as a defensive stopper inside. The mailbag provided some sked clarity, but not much more. There were certainly minuses, but I yearn for another Dick Walters type to shake the tree a bit.

Who’s the most handsome coach in the MVC? Yikes! I don’t know what’s worse, the stupid question or the decision to answer it.

Am I the only person who feels like evan has just been here forever?! he isn't ever going to make any major consistent contribution. I still remember the game where he missed like 11 straight 3 ptrs including one for the win. My God, he seems like a great kid but I cannot wait for him to graduate so they are forced to play someone else, haha.

I guess I can understand the university's position on this given the unpredictable recruiting year. You get two players coming back who are at least somebody who knows where the shower rooms are located. Seeing as how about a third of the players in the country entered the NCAA's gift of goop -- the transfer portal, at least Lickliter could say, 'well, that's two scholarships that I didn't waste.' The team doesn't get a lot better but at least they aren't getting fingerprinted down at the police station.

Most of the questions are the same ones we all ask on this forum and the answers are a nice condensation of what most of us agree is realistic. The fact that Lickliter's contract status is private information grates at me a little. UE as a private school, can hide almost anything they want -- and have zero problem clogging up my email inbox with appeals for money. They want the public to participate in boosting their attendance from a Marty-era low and they have no trouble getting public sponsors for signage at the Ford, which wasn't built with UE money. I don't need all the details, but some basics are kind of important.
The term 'transparency' only works with some components of our world.
