I believe the conversation about UE going D2 or lower was brought up by the person who wrote the article at the end of his own personal opinion. I was referencing the broader community who chatter about the Aces dropping down to more glory days. I know the fan board isn’t that stupid with a couple of troll exceptions. I had this chat yesterday with somebody who isn't familiar with UE or the program, certainly not its history. We were discussing the lore of the Aces and he was summarily intrigued. I suppose there is a very tempting notion that if the program drifts back into D-II, those glory games with Wesleyan and Roanoke and even Winston-Salem will light up the place. The alternatives are to be more like Gonzaga and less like Chicago State. My personal opinion is that this is a flat spot and all the turmoil will also soon pass. Evansville remains a very attractive school and there is no reason they can't go upward. But the Mailbag seems to have a bit of a theme, that being ... what happens when the money runs out? Hell, print more money!

We are still less than one year into this health fiasco so I think it's too early to watch nervously for a falling sky.

I truly thank you all for your passion on the Aces. The #SaveUE movement has mentioned dropping to D2. This isn’t coming from nowhere. I don’t think those involved in that proposal understand athletics finances and would feel safe to guarantee neither the president or AD would oversee a move down. As I wrote, UE athletics is doing OK. Better than schools with football programs. I have proof of every question asked if people think it’s clickbait. The idea is to interact with readers, which is why I check into this board. Let’s all hope for a less hectic 2021 than 2020 played out.

I don't know too many beat writers who take the time to directly associate with fans, so this is a rare treat for us UE diehards. Assuming I already know the answer to this, but do you know if there are any plans to release more detailed financial information from UE's side? Or could that possibly be a topic of an article for you in the near future? This proposal has not been well-received by people in my social circle (admittedly not sports fans) who want to drop to D2 or D3, and I think having some clarity on financials would go a long way towards assuaging their concerns.

Actually, I signed up for a C & P subscription because of the Mailbag, though there will be other stories that interest me. I have no interest in Evansville now beyond the university. Still, being linked to the Aces only though posted links here isn't enough.
Hell, I don't even subscribe to the paper where I worked for more than 20 years.
I certainly hope the SaveUE "movement" relies on intelligent conversations instead of screaming at the windows.

I agree that Chad just didn't pull this up for fear and headlines. There are a few social media warriors who keep bringing up dropping athletics. They are basically in two groups. The first one are the ones triggered by the proposed cuts to the liberal arts department and majors. For example, one of the most vocal ones is an alumn with a major in Archeology and a minor in Art History. Nothing wrong with that, but it's obvious she never cared for athletics, and couldn't differentiate between Marty Simmons and Marty McFly. They are triggered, and have no concept that one is not related to the others. As Chad has pointed out, athletics is in pretty good shape. The basketball program is the biggest bridge between the community and the university. How many boosters will disappear if this program isn't in D-1? They also don't consider the national recognition these programs get, regardless of records.
The other group is the few old sourheads who pine for the days of a packed Roberts, and state it was because we were in D-2. What they don't realize is that is not entirely correct. We were in the old College Division and did indeed dominate it for many years. That division is basically what is today's so-called mid-majors. The schools we competed with are pretty much the same ones we still are, including damn near the entire MVC. No one is going to fill up the Ford Center to watch them beat Alice Lloyd or Wartburg.
I hate for anyone to lose a job, and really hope that somehow these cuts can be avoided, but the future of this university is not going to be saved by Archeology degrees.

I had a Wartburg sweatshirt when I was still a UE student. B. Speak for yourself on Alice Lloyd. But yeah, there are people who see university sports as the stereotypical 'jock with a cocky attitude' who doesn't deserve to have an opinion or a spot at the table. We may never know how much money came in to the general fund from proud alumni after the UK game. The Aces were national news for more than a week. Had that continued, these conversations would be going in a different direction. Had the asteroid not missed us ...

Per Chad this afternoon:
"It’s about time for another mailbag. Have questions about the Aces, other local sports or anything else on your mind? Reply, DM or email (in bio) and I'll answer in a story early next week." -----------------------------------------------
Questions for me would center on the following:
1. The women's new basketball coach and recruiting - Are they going to hire any additional assistant coaches? Are they going to definitely retain those that are listed on the staff on the gopurpleaces website? How is recruiting going as they have a lot of roster spots to fill; obviously there was one official recruit in the news recently.
2. Do the men's basketball team plan to fill their additional two spots before the season starts? When do they start summer workouts? Will this be a more traditional offseason (than last year) in regards to their training and workouts? What do you think their starting five and rotation will look like?
That's pretty good for starters - I might have more questions later.

How about any scheduling info for next year? Any chance of any games with Butler or IU given the changes at IU. What about possible MVC expansion or changes with new commish.

I doubt they will announce a schedule if they don't have one, right?

I doubt they will announce a schedule if they don't have one, right? I think what pennyrileace is saying is (that they might not have an official schedule with dates) but could Chad tell us which schools that he thinks we will have on our non-conference schedule - either from what he is hearing or from deduction (like contracts where we played a game last year and there is supposed to be another game this year). I think that is what pennyrileace is saying and that is a reasonable request. I agree that they won't (likely) have the official schedule yet.

I think that is what pennyrileace is saying and that is a reasonable request. I agree that they won't (likely) have the official schedule yet. Well, yeah...Chad could ask the UE people who they would prefer to play but unless they've made contact, they could say anything. If they haven't announced a schedule, it's likely what we would call 'efficiency' inside a dome of sensible communication. If they say they want to play somebody and end up not playing them, somebody will complain that they didn't get the deal they told us they were gonna get and therefore are either stupid or cheap. Throwing out personal opinions about the schedule might add some interest but it's counterproductive and not the way any business operates. Nobody buying season tickets in May. To be pointedly honest right now, if I am UE, I keep the pedal to the metal on upgrading this women's program and staying on top of the spring sports teams. Those programs are where the news is now. The Aces baseball team is about .500 and plays a tough schedule. The women have a new coach and a new dream. Stay focused for the moment. Tossing out some phantom wish-list for the MBB "schedule" is a recipe for criticism. HOW-EV-er ... discussing who we would like to see is a lot of fun. I only wish I knew more about the team and how it matches up, which means I wish we knew as much about their projected foes. I would guess the coaches of those teams are sitting there with a stack of papers wondering which 12 guys they are gonna have too once Northwestern and Penn State glean off their 7-footers.

I’d just like to ask if I’ll know the home schedule BEFORE I buy the season ticket like every other team in the MVC. It’s like buying a car and then finding out which car you bought after the check clears.

It’s like buying a car and then finding out which car you bought after the check clears. As well, if they are going to try to build a regional schedule, knowing some of the road games might matter even more. If you want to take a long weekend to travel to Nashville or Indy, you might need to look further out on your planning schedule. Even more fun would be knowing if you can bivouac in Hawaii in late December or just have to settle for seeing the sights of western Nova Scotia. Of course, half the people on the Zoom call represent the other team and they have their own problems as well. Belmont is also looking to upgrade without downscaling. I mean, yeah ... it's a great game to get Butler, but Butler might want to choose between UE and UCLA. It's not like that matters much to them, right?
