Kyle Sokeland @kylesokeland · 58m Reitz guard Owen Dease adds an in-state Division I offer. Averaged 16.3 points and 5.0 rebounds as a junior. OD @owendease · 1h Blessed to receive and offer from IUPUI !

Owen Dease had 38 points and 9 rebounds against Evansville North tonight. Hit 7 threes. Stats from a tweet from Kyle Sokeland. Todd Lickliter likes shooters. I think a kid like Dease could contribute much more to UE than a Gilgeous Alexander or Matthews or Page unless they can prove to make a perimeter shot.

Or maybe I should have said they SHOULD have. I guess that I was never destined to have a state basketball champion at Reitz.

This team may surprise you. They are better than expected. His supporting cast is better than last year Well, I certainly hope so. My wife and I go to a lot of high school games. We have said this from day one. Owen Dease looks better for the college level than Lander. My wife is a Hoosier’s fan and she was so pissed when they got Lander. She wanted Swope more than Lander. We both believe he is way overrated. Glad he did not go to Louisville. I hope Evansville can land Dease. I like a kid that has some length and ain’t afraid to shoot it. Hope Lander can turn it around and prove us wrong.

SHOULD HAVE is right. Whoever told Lander (likely more than one) that he could come into IU and play a lot of minutes and contribute this year was obviously foolish. This kid is a boy amongst men and has zero business on the floor this year. He missed his senior season which is a great time in a kid's life to go to IU and sit the bench, lose confidence and I have to blame Miller as on of the contributors to his downfall. Reitz would have won a ton of games this year had he stayed but the dreams of big $$ and the NBA proved to be just too much to stick around little ole Evansville for. Our Aces need all the help we can get after another poor weekend of play in the Valley so Dease come on over.

Owen has a HUGE weekend
Friday night: 38 points, 9 boards Saturday morning: 18 points, 15 rebounds Saturday afternoon: 17 points, unknown rebound
So, in less than 24 hours, he scored 73 points, had over 24 rebounds, and who knows what his other stat lines looked like.

He gets a free additional year to work out, practice, and get some minutes a year earlier than he would have. This season doesn’t count against the 4-year eligibility due to Covid so he’ll still have 4 more years to play if he thinks he needs it before trying to go pro.

IMHO the loss is that he gave up a fun filled senior year and now he has lost confidence and I think those around him have lost confidence in him. This is the risk of jumping in a very competitive Big Ten at a very young age and being a "young player" vs the much bigger and experienced Big Ten. I guess the plus is he will not have lost a year of eligibility.

I am reminded of 56,000 other kids who could shoot a quick outside shot and connect on more than half of them. The trick in college ball is to get open to take that shot, and when you have the ball, knowing what to do with it after that. I mean, yeah ... it's a start if the kid can peel off and get open for a 3-ball against competition that's comparable.
Quickness and on-court physical strength are difficult to teach. Not saying this Dease kid can't be a 16-20 ppg player at UE, not saying he can. At the worst, he's roster depth.

Dease throws in another 19 last night at Central. I swear, this kid is the wing player we need (or tall off guard). I hope the staff is really looking at him.
