If they come back, as seniors staying an extra year, they will not count against the scholarship limit (one year NCAA rule). But given the finances, I would be shocked if UE filled those spots. Which would mean that if they return, we probably have 1 scholarship left. The NCAA decided that the returning players would not count against a team's 13 max. Right. Including those 3 returning seniors, we would be allowed a total of 16 scholarship players next season. But I am pretty sure UE would not fill all of those allowable scholarships because of the expense.

Dease and FJ Reitz are still alive in the state tournament. They just won the Regional Semifinal game over Center Grove. Dease scored 30 in the overtime win!

Here is hoping Dease will sign with the Aces.
I love his height, quick release, and quickness. That said, how much he would play would really depend on his defense, which to me is way behind his offensive game. He, IMO, would take a couple years in the college game to become a real force.

And then Reitz scores 31 total points in the championship game. I’m still a hard pass on this one.

4 things about Dease:
1. Very good ball player and can be a dynamic scorer (deep range, can post up, and score off the dribble) 2. Very good family 3. Winning tradition and works hard to get better 4. Very good friends with Khristian Lander - with everything going on at IU, could he possibly come home to try to be a big fish in a smaller pond?

I agree with each of these points. UE is a “family” type of team and each players tenure here is to short to have any head cases or problem children. We’ve done pretty good with this in the past and had only a few exceptions. Getting a good kid like Owen will only pay dividends no matter how well he adapts to the college game.

Not that I am a huge Purdue fan (I like them a whole lot more than UK..lol) but one thing Painter has done a heck of a lot better than anything Miller has done at IU...take the freshmen that are not ready physically and/or mentally and sit them out a year as a redshirt. They come back stronger, have a year of classes under their belt making the load lighter during the school year and do not lose confidence but come out stronger and more confident. Miller has done the opposite (Lander). If Dease is not strong enough (and he is not yet) to bang with the other forwards in The Valley, redshirt him next year and give him time to develop. If we have 2 or 3 of the current Seniors coming back we will not need him anyway to do much next year based on who we think is comming back and who we have coming in so far.

This is done all the time all over the country. Football is probably the best example. Sometimes in the strong programs it seems like half the incoming freshman class is redshirted. It’s so common that announcers often refer to a true freshman.
Back to Dease. Every time i saw him on video my thought were he was too weak to play in the Valley or most D-I programs. His offensive skills are amazing. I kept thinking he would be a wasted scholarship. However, I never thought about signing and redshirt. That does make the most sense. So many offenses today park one or two players in the corner as designated shooters. Even if Owen never developed enough to play inside, he certainly could fill up the basket from the corner.
While we definitely need some big men to play in the paint, maybe Owen needs to become a Purple Ace.

For those of you that say take a hard pass on Owen Dease you are dead wrong. Kid can shoot the rock, he's long and fairly athletic. We could do way worse! The bottom line is he can score the ball.

Exactly. Teams that have killed us recently are long and athletic. Bradley, birds, trees, Loyola. And the list just goes on and on.

Once the NCAA sees how successful the transfer portal has been for the money programs, I will be quite astonished if they don't extend it for another 2 seasons to allow the SEC and ACC to reboot. The 2021 tournament isn't going to make them any money either.
That being the case, I'd be real cautious about recruiting any high school freshmen. Most of them will land someplace this fall and do a version of Samari Curtis. They will be part of an ongoing revolving door. A mid-major program that invests a scholarship in a 3-star recruit might as well just call it a sunk cost.

This transfer rule is 100 percent awful. I read where one team lost their entire roster. Not good for anyone!
