Powerhouse Aces are home Tuesday for a non-con against bitter rival Bellarmine, which hasn't forgotten the 14-2 pasting they got last season at home. The Bellarmines, who will be pleased to play at Braun, are 1-2 after a series at Cookeville Tech.
Not much practical information to share on Belly. Matt Flaherty had 2 dingers last weekend for them. He was a highly decorated juco player before transferring to Belly.
3 p.m. start on that. No pitchers have been announced yet. Matt Maloney has started in the past as a SW Illinois College (Belleville) pitcher. He's another under-the-radar transfer for Wes Carroll, who snatches good players away from regions where they'd be heavily recruited by other programs. Drew Fieger, a juco transfer as well from Lincoln Trail, is also a starter candidate. Lincoln Trail should be U of Illinois turf.
UE will be looking to get some early national pub after the ORU series, drubbing (sort of) a team that went to the CWS and previously dominated the series with the Aces dating back to the 1890s, or some other such obscure century. Oral Roberts was ranked #26 in the NCBWA preseason poll and was receiving votes in the USA Today/Coaches preseason poll as well. They are now 1-2.
Frosh lefties Kenton Deverman and Kevin Reed are pleasant surprises, along with transfer 2B Cal McGinnis, who raked the Orals for several big hits. There are so far no weak spots in the Aces lineup. That will seek its own regression eventually.
After Tuesday's home game (temps in the 60s?), the Aces head for Nawlins for a 3-gamer against regionally solid U. New Orleans. The Privateers took 2 out of 3 from Georgia State. UNO plays a lot of home games early, as do most teams down that way.
These games go a long way toward stretching out the pitching roster. UE has some question marks in the rotation that Kevin Reed may have helped solve. Donovan Schultz might be the staff ace, although Nick Smith will argue with him. Smith had a short start on Saturday.
Bullpen: Max Hansmann and Ja(with a K)ob Meyers have looked sharp. Shane Harris, not so much. Parker MacCauley, a transfer from the aforementioned Tenn. Tech, might loom large as a bullpen piece.
