Is it too early to be concerned with our overall pitching? Seems we have struggled early. Everybody is scoring runs now. These guys haven't had enough outdoor innings yet.

Wow if Taulbert is a legit hitter, that's a nice righty bat. That home run was scorched.

Good grief, Fouggerouse is awful at 1st base.

Rumsey living with a sombrero so far.

UE outfield defense leaves a little to be desired. At least Rumsey struck out 5 times.

we are letting this one slip away. Pitching and defense have not been good. Yes, it is early.

UNO with some timely hits and some pretty good clutch pitching at the end. This is a game you can lose in Feb. but not in May.

Game 2 of the Big Easy trip today at 2 p.m. Nick Smith on the hill for the Purples. A couple of notes:
Mark Shallenberger, who missed a lot of last season with a broken hand, is OPS'ing 1.300. That is unsustainable but if he remains close to that, it's a frothy topping on a cherry pie.
Aces likely win last night's game if they have Hug in there, although Taubert did hit a home run. Fougerousse is just not a first baseman, which is Huggie's position.

Do we know what Chance Hug’s injury is? Do we know if he is day to day?
He played the first two games against ORU and had a big HR in game 2. However, he did not play in game 3 or since (ORU game 3, Bellarmine or UNO game 1). Looks like Kevin McCormick initially replaced him at 1B but since they have moved Kip F. to first base. Didn’t sound like Kip did well at 1B (but only sporadically saw the game). Also saw late that Taubert (Kip’s replacement in right field) badly misplayed a ball down the line which cost us. Although I’m sure there were other plays that cost us like leaving the bases loaded in the top of the eight inning with one out (Rumsey struck out and Taubert flew out) but that happens - just hope not with the bases loaded
It sounds like we miss him defensively even more than his bat. Hopefully he is back in the lineup soon, if not today.
Update: Hug must have been injured late in game #2 at ORU as McCormick replaced him in the top of the eight (and struck out). Looks like Hug grounded out to the pitcher in the top of the seventh.

I did not hear the nature of Hug's injury and it's not likely they will be specific. The UNO announcer said he was not probable for the weekend. After that, who knows.
As for defense, Rumsey also had a stinker of a game. 2 errors, 5 strikeouts, and twice with runners he could have at least advanced. Oh well, we've all done that. The ball that Taubert played cost them 1 run, but not 2. Rumsey's first error turned out to be an earned run (single turned into a double) and his overthrow wasn't what beat them.
Fougerousse didn't actually commit errors, but he didn't do what 1B should do -- first, catch the ball. The bats are there, the pitching is sometimes there -- it's not a crisis.
Not making pitches is acceptable and the other team converting is predictable. UNO lived in sunshine.

Is it too early to be concerned with our overall pitching? Seems we have struggled early. I would say it is too early. Have to figure starters Donovan Schultz and Nick Smith will get to their 4.5ish ERA's of last year.
Kevin Reed (FR) had a great start against Oral Roberts and Elias Hachem will be key components in the starting rotation, but will take some time to see how these younger guys progress.
Our hitting has been great early on and hope it continues while our pitching finds its way.

Walks are haunting. McGinnis has a couple of RBI. Smith had a pretty good start. 4 innings, 1 run, earned.

Wes went too long with Deverman. Need more than 2 runs to win these games. Deverman is a find. This is a nice audition for young pitchers against decent competition.
