This is that other part of how the mid-majors don't stand much of a chance. No Valley team can afford to lose one of its starters in the middle of the season, even for 2 games. Sad thing, is that w/ the NIL, a HC will rarely get the opportunity to fully develop his top recruits, as a result of the NCAA "low hanging fruit" principle favoring P6 schools.
You gonna be scouting the ISU @ Valpo game Wed. night? Next week the Sycs are in E-ville!
The last time I scouted a team, they lost 106-39, so I suspect I will just let the chips roll where they flounder. But from all I've seen of the Beaconfused, they play real good ball for 8 minutes, ordinary ball for 16 minutes and the rest of the time, they hope Schwieger is another version of No. 33. They are giving Powell benefit of doubt, which is what all the Valley schools have to do now -- but I don't know if Powell is going to be a good coach or just somebody who might get lucky enough to recruit some kids who want to play there a year and move on. Valpo once was a great entry point for foreign players. I think somebody said once that 17 countries have been represented on their rosters just since their run to Sweet 16 back in "the day." That will continue and, to be honest, it's the only way to find talent now for mid-majors. Even then, the good ones won't stay.

Yep, probably time to start thinking about how the Sicklies are going to finish 2nd in the baseball tournament. Jesting aside, even in a crap environment, Valpo is a tough place to play.

I bounced back & forth last night from the IL ST/UNI game, but ISU has stolen a page from the Racers claiming Evansville as their "2nd home!" Blue was the dominant color @ Valpo last night...and I was NOT impressed w/ Powell's coaching performance early in the 2nd half, when both Avila & Kent went out w/ 3 PF's.

Valpo as a city is really not a big fan of the Beaconaders. Season tix sales are for alumni who live in the city and maybe some business owners who see exposure as a social necessity. Here, we have more Notre Dame fans than Valpo fans. But part of that is connected to football. Of course, IU and Purdue have a strong fan base up this way. But the weather is nice and anybody who lives within an hour is finding travel to be pretty stress-free this winter. It did seem to be a pretty good crowd, considering what that program has become. Valpo needs to replace those bleachers, like ... last week. So if a lot of Sick State fans were there, it's no surprise. As for Powell, his team is incredibly young. I don't know if he's better or worse than Lottich. If you don't have the horses, you can't pull the plow. I am wary of his ability to recruit.

UIC and Drake are tied at 83 with 5.2 seconds to go. www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/playbyplay/_/gameId/401601922Going to overtime. Drake is 23-6 (14-4) and UIC is 11-18 (4-14). This is why they play the games. You just don't know on any given night. Update: UIC up 91-86 with 2:02 to go in OT. Update 2: Going to double OT tied at 92. UIC with a 15 to 8 advantage on made 3's but Drake with a 40-26 advantage in points in the paint. DeVries with 33 points and 13 rebounds and counting. Brodie evidently fouled out in the 1st OT with 2:47 left. Update 3: In triple OT now tied 100 all. DeVries and UIC's Rivera have played all 50 minutes so far. DeVries with 39 points and Okani with 31 points so far. Okani has played 48 minutes and counting. Final: Drake 107 UIC 105 in triple overtime. UIC had a couple of good looks at the end for the tie. A missed fall away ten-foot jumper and a missed tip-in on the miss. Drake holds on.
