Anyone notice on verbal commits that Khalil Shaheed committed on June 3. Idk what to think on that.
Just researched. He is going to a community college in Miami. Just VC being idiotic again

Not saying this kid is a difference maker. Wouldn't it have been nice to get a difference maker? I guess we are at the point of getting the best talent we can. We could have done better, we could have done worse. Sometimes a guy who has a nose for the ball, can rebound with bigger players.

New kid is a winner. His high school team won like 56 straight regular season games over 2 years. And he’s the backbone of the team. Not saying he’s fantastic, but some intagibles make a difference. 9 th rated player in the state. Solid, not spectacular.

First Team All-State and KY Gatorade Player of the Year so somebody liked him. He made 41% of he’s 3-point shots on 100 attempts so he developed a jump shot his senior year. He was primarily a driver before.
He’s 6-5 and 210 who can score and rebound. We had someone like that once before, Brad Leaf. I like his potential and I think he will play at the 3-spot. He scored 1746 points and grabbed 1101 rebounds during his career so he knows how to play the game and wasn’t a one year flash.

Interesting signing- sounds like a very good, solid player but doesn’t address our size issue. But he does seem like a good rebounder for his size.

A good pick up this late in the process. Should be a good pairing with Trey Hall. Anyone know what other offers he had?

He might BE a difference maker. I tend to be conservative about such matters because a top high school player coming into the Valley is going to be up against a lot of former top high school players in a league now dominated by experienced veterans. I saw some of the highlight clips for this kid and he can jump, and he can move. There's plenty to like. How does he do the collegiate transition? How do the other players work with him, and how does he work with the coach? Is there a Kenneth Roy in his world? We will learn all that but for the moment, just getting such kids to notice UE and say there's a place to thrive -- I gotta love it! It's how the old Aces were built and how they thrived under Walters and Crews.

The point I made about the kid coming into the Valley, which is either not important or it's really important. UE and the rest of the conference need to promote their league if they expect this sort of player to gravitate toward the conference. I think the Valley was on an upward swing 3 years ago and hit the peak when all they got into the NCAA was Bradley. They should have built on Loyola instead of selling out by essentially implying that Loyola was some Chicago school that had a 90-year old nun cheering for them. I don't recall very much outside of this forum and a couple of others that brought the Valley into the conversation, but rather ... wow Loyola is just doing fantastic!
Not sure how much blabbering on this board I will make but the addition of Alex Matthews is either a coup for the Aces or it's a coup for the Valley in general. If this conference wants to rise to the level of the A-10 even the WCC in terms of glitter programs, they need to start appealing to guys who want to play at a higher level than just "well, we beat most teams in the OVC" or "we get to play 3 games in glorious Pepperdine, California."
Yeah maybe they do pound each other around so that a 12-6 record is as good as it gets, which is an indictment of the NCAA ... the rant we can all support. But 24-8 is a program I can celebrate. Even if Alex Matthews is not the straw that stirs the drink, he's a kid that the Aces have to have. We can't keep settling for guys who were "starters" at some rural high school outside Beauford, Kansas.
The Valley needs to sell itself and compete currently as a group. If they raise the overall level of play, all the programs will do better. Better depth, better diversity on the court, and that translates to competitive games -- more attendance, better revenue, better TV and better exposure. The NCAA, if it continues to ignore that, then they showed their asses officially. Maybe letting all 14 Big Ten teams into their little "dance" would help the whole.

I like what you had to say abouthepurple concerning both the Aces and the Valley. Will this kid be a deal maker? I don’t know but we will find out over the next four years. The important thing is that UE needs to attract quality athletes to fill all 13 scholarships and I definitely think he is one of these. We need the type of player who can pick up the load when another is having an off night or is sitting the bench due to a couple of quick fouls called by a referee. Whether that player is another starter or comes off the bench doesn’t matter.
Also, we need to be seen as a program that attracts talent. With the internet and AAU programs high school players know more about each other than we think. Most of them want to be a part of a good team that plays against good teams. There are plenty of talented athletes in Indiana and the surrounding states and we should cultivate those recruits to choose UE rather than another school. I think that is what TL was referring to when he talked about building the foundation for UE basketball.

Last year, we lost out on Moreno from Scott Co. KY. He went to EKU, and averaged 10/7 for them, started about 2/3s of their games, and will be a stud this year. Alex is a little smaller, but his recruiting profile is about the same; high majors look at a kid like this, and he’s a little short, a little slow, maybe played at less than a huge high school.
Frankly, I think Mr. Matthews could be a very important piece for coach Lick. I also sense heavy involvement from Logan. Congrats Alex. You are following a line of terrific Aces that came from smaller HSs; DJ, Colt, Craig Snow, Jaylon Brown, etc.
