In my opinion Playing UE would not be USI's Super Bowl. Even when they were D2 they usually played big name opponents in exhibitions. Quite the contrary, USI has to be wishing they could have played against UE last year. Give credit when it's due. they went 2-0 against the Valley (one more than we did in 21 tries) beating ISU and SIU, both of whom were upper tier Valley teams and collectively spanked us hard 4 out of 5 games (game at SIU was relatively close, still a loss). I think USI has to return both games, and if there have been discussions with UE and UE is insisting to have game at Ford, then USI may not want to play 3 Valley road games... especially with a fresh roster and the unknowns that come with it. They need more home games most likely. Can't see Rags wanting to play at USI this year, another road game and their arena is a Pit to boot. I mean that as a compliment to them. Close seating and loud. USI may feel that after last year they've flat earned a home game against UE to start the series. I predict this series starts the following season at the earliest. Pure speculation on my part, no inside information whatsoever. I don't see a UE/USI game being played at USI...ever in the next 10 years. They will work out a deal on how to split proceeds at the Ford. USI will also want the oppty to play on the floor where the OVC tourney is held.

AustinAce posted this schedule update on another post: Miami (Ohio), Nov. 6 at Las Vegas Holiday Classic, Nov. 24-25 at BYU, Dec. 6 at Cincinnati, Dec. 29 or 30 ($78,000 payout) Ball State, TBA at Southeast Missouri State, TBA Tennessee-Martin, TBA at Bellarmine, TBA _____________________________________________________________
Seems like we are in another MTE that is a bit questionable -- most other MTE's have their teams set, but I still don't see any other teams listed for the LV Classic --- www.bloggingthebracket.com/2023/4/4/23665918/2023-24-mens-college-basketball-exempt-multi-team-events-mte-thanksgiving-early-season-tournaments

Looks like there are still 63 D1 teams that are not in a MTE tournament yet. With the exception of Missouri out of the SEC, these teams appear to be all smaller to mid major schools. The 63 schools are listed at the bottom of the link that 65pointgame provided above. So it appears to me that whenever the other three teams are listed for our MTE that they will have to come out of these 63 schools.

It is worrisome that we haven’t seen any announcements yet though.

I would rather play in an on-campus event like USI is with the Duke Blue Devil Classic. They play at Duke (paid 135k), at Bucknell and at LaSalle. At least we would have a shot at playing a home game in an MTE like this, plus get paid $ from Duke.
It is interesting to see where the other MVC teams are playing...big score for UNI in their MTE with all the P5 schools.

And I’m sure us being the only team publicly committed is not the most attractive situation for other teams considering our recent history. Hopefully the allure of Vegas can draw in some of the better 63 teams left.

The Look is not good for the Vegas Classic. While there are good teams left in the 63, I don't get why UE is committing to a tourney that takes MONTHS to fill their field. This is 2 years in a row that we are waiting for table scraps.

My guess (obviously no inside knowledge) for Vegas.
Big Sky - Montana
Big West - Cal State Bakersfield
WAC - Tarleton State (Texans love Vegas)

This is 2 years in a row that we are waiting for table scraps. Sadly, right now we are table scraps. Until we improve our product and performance, we aren't going to get good invites. Our MTE history over the last few years is horrible. The only positive I can think of is finding the Fairfield message board. Those guys are hilarious. Are MTE's required and that beneficial? At this point, I would rather see us focused on our improvement and putting together decent schedules..with or without a MTE. Once we have improved the program, we will be a little more attractive to the more stable MTE's around.

I don't know if MTE's are required by The Valley but they are really schedule fillers and the equivalent of a bowl game for fans, boosters. If you don't participate, it may be difficult to complete the schedule with 3 games that fit what you're looking for (home games, what quality, etc) when the alternative is a trip to Vegas which is fun for everyone who is involved from the players and coaches to fans. Due to scheduling at the Ford Center, the circus is in town that week so we can't play at home so why not go somewhere warm, go bond as a team and play somebody that you probably aren't going to match up with in a traditional home-home due to travel distances.
Certainly the bigger MTE's are worth it for resume purposes but outside of the Wooden event out in California in 2016 that matched us up with Providence in round 1 (Arizona, Michigan State were also playing in it) the chances are there if you win to really boost the resume and computer profile. As our profile raises, so too hopefully will the level of competition and invites in MTE's.

Aces&Eights posted a good interview with coach Rags by Jevin over on the “Coaching Staff” thread.
Around the 10 minute mark Rags is very upfront that the Vegas MTE tournament is shaky and that if it does not pan out that there are three other tournaments that they could jump in.
So don’t book those Vegas tickets yet.

An MTE is basically required by the NCAA to get to 31 games. The rule is:
28 games allowed + a 3 game MTE or 29 games allowed + a 2 game MTE
