With college and high school athletes now able to get paid through Name, Image, Likeness deals, I did just a little reading up on some of the top amounts being paid. I concentrated on basketball, but know that football players, especially in the SEC and a few others like Ohio State and Michigan, are getting more than basketball players. A lot more. According to ON3db, Trayce Jackson- Davis of IU is getting $885,000 this year. He has deals with Adidas, Merchants Bank of Indiana, Campus Ink, Push Paddle or Pedal and Turnstone Center. His deals have been made through Hoosiers For Good, a collective set up last year for IU athletes. While still in high school, Bronny James already has NIL deals totalling $7.2 million, and the next Manning quarterback, Arch Manning, already has $3.7 million in deals. They still are in high school but already have deals which pay more money than most people earn in a lifetime. Through Hoosiers For Good, of which Calbert Cheaney is part of, Jalen Hood-Schifino has NIL deals for $184,000 for his freshman season. If he returns for a sophomore season, that total will have to go way up. Trey Galloway has deals paying him $39,000. Not bad walking around money for a college player. I couldn't find how much Anthony Leal gets, but as aceloverlarry mentioned in anotherthread, he got enough to pay off his sister's college tuition at DePauw, likely a good amount, which undoubtedly changes the start of her adult life in a very positive way. And he only gets off the bench for timeouts. You want Leal or similar bench players to transfer, you'll need NIL to step up. This is just one school. There are lots of schools that have the ability to line their athletes with huge deals that will be life changing for top athletes. They are not just getting a free haircut and a free pizza. Even bench players at P6 schools are getting deals that may make transferring "down" not worth their while. This is the new world of collegiate athletics that UE and everybody below the highest levels is up against.

I hope the universities that profit from these players are also aware that many of them aren't quite up to speed on tax laws.

The one percenter’s are the ones that benefit. The rest are getting table scraps. Most are lucky to get a few hundred dollars in their pockets. Also Look at the junior college football programs that are folding around the country since NIL was introduced. Cost Benefit Analysis not working out so well for most.

Most universities that have the support for these kinds of deals also have athletic support staff now to guide their athletes through all of this. I’m sure that’s something they help them understand along with the contracts.

This is the new world of collegiate athletics that UE and everybody below the highest levels is up against. It’ll definitely make it harder, but I think Leals a rare exception. Not because he makes so much money sitting the bench, but because his head coach is okay with him staying on the roster and receiving that collective money while contributing little in games. For every Leal, there’s probably 3 Parker Stewart’s or Khristian Landers that are told they need to pursue other opportunities because their scholarship and NIL money won’t be there next season. Most of these guys could still play at a mid major level even if Mike Woodson doesn’t want them.

I’m sure that’s something they help them understand along with the contracts. When we discuss "most" of anything, it's the unusual event that becomes the shiny object. I can't believe that will happen, but it seems it should be on the back of the collective to pay attention to this. Not everyone is immune to mistakes, and I wonder where the line actually is. I mean, does Dolly's House of Fun and Pleasure get the right to sponsor the cheerleaders? There have always been rules in place and there has always been somebody around willing to break them. Paying taxes is akin to dying for the things a person needs to do in life. But hey, "free money". The big problem now is that it's hard to tell what is/is not where NIL wants to go. It's sort of been a matter of making it up as we go along. Eventually, college teams will be known as the Old National Bank Evansville Aces. The bank may have to allow the team to wear some form of purple just because ... even though it's not the bank's colors.

Could be similar to pro soccer teams that wear jersey's with a sponsor name on the front.

NBA teams have sponsor patches on the uniform. The Pacers have the Motorola logo.

Is this different than what was previously set up, or in addition to? I am not sure I understand this, but the only 3 basketball players listed are all in the portal.

Is this different than what was previously set up, or in addition to? I am not sure I understand this, but the only 3 basketball players listed are all in the portal. That part is really confusing for sure. I’m guessing the other players haven’t filled out the paperwork yet. This is in addition to our collective. The collective should be soliciting money from fans and businesses and then helping facilitating deals that get that money into players hands for various services. Other collectives will pay players to do charity work or to simply make an appearance at a golf outing, etc. It could literally be anything but they’re supposed to be the medium that gets big money from fans to players essentially. I’m not sure what ours is doing, they haven’t really said much of anything since their inception. This opendorse is more of a marketplace centered around UE athletes where they have set prices for simple basic transactions like a cameo video, autograph, or appearance at event. What really confuses me on the opendorse is we have a “disc golf” athlete at UE?? We don’t even have a disc golf team. I don’t think anyone has an NCAA sanctioned disc golf team tbh

Thanks for the clarification. It's still not a good look for the only players to be in the portal already. I would be very hesitant to send a dime or request until at least the portal is closed. For example, how would you feel if you had just dropped $409 for Preston Phillips to show up at something and the next day he jumps in the portal?
I might send a donation to the disc golf guy. I doubt there is a portal for them.
