If these sponsors are just going to spend $600,000 to get a guy to "attend" a university so they can revel in their run for glory, it seems they get what they deserve. Not unlike MLB where pitchers get 10-figure salaries and end up on the TJ rehab list, you gamble.
All the same, wagering that kind of money on a 19-year-old is one thing but if I am the bank employee and haven't had a raise in 2 years, I might wonder why the bank is sponsoring a basketball player to do "promotional engagements."

Preston’s a man that values his time and I highly respect that. As he should. I only used him as an example of how fast the portal can change NIL initiatives. For the record, I still believe Preston has a tremendous upside, and hope he can stay.

Agree with your first point. On your second pt, I believe a player like Parrish has great name recognition on a team that was selling out Assembly Hall for games and the community bank finds her a likeable public figure and worth the money wagered.
Or maybe you can just get the bosses cute kids and have them talk about "The really big check." (which probably has been a boon for this dealership)

(which probably has been a boon for this dealership) I do believe that the young female players are a vastly underappreciated resource. Womens CBB has grown immensely as the IU and Iowa programs have shown. Even the programs without much pedigree are improved and the women who get recruited usually stay the whole 4 years. Honestly, if you wanted to sell products in Evansville this winter, Abby Feit and Anna Newman would have been a much better choice than any of the men's players.

Wish we could see more activity from our NIL collective. We are very quickly falling behind our valley peers when it comes to this

It appears Baker wants a pro division, which solves one problem and creates another. Now the networks will treat the mid-majors like MLB treats its minor leagues. Advertisers are going to adjust. I think the only surprise is that the people who didn't believe this would happen kept believing it. This essentially murders Valley baseball and turns women's sports into a blithering joke. But it lets Northwestern opt out and decide if it wants to lose 60-0 to Wisconsin or win 34-33 over North Dakota State. From the AP article: LAS VEGAS (AP) — NCAA President Charlie Baker is asking members to make one of the most dramatic shifts in the history of college sports by allowing highly resourced schools to pay some of their athletes. In a letter sent to more than 350 Division I schools Tuesday, Baker said he wants the association to create a new tier of NCAA Division I sports where schools would be required to offer at least half their athletes a payment of at least $30,000 per year through a trust fund. Baker also proposed allowing all Division I schools to offer unlimited educational benefits and enter into name, image and likeness licensing deals with athletes. He said the disparity in resources between the wealthiest schools in the top tier of Division I called the Football Bowl Subdivision and other D-I members — along with the hundreds of Division II and III schools — is creating “a new series of challenges.” “The challenges are competitive as well as financial and are complicated further by the intersection of name, image and likeness opportunities for student-athletes and the arrival of the Transfer Portal,” wrote Baker, the former Massachusetts governor who took over at the NCAA in March. Division I is currently divided for football into the FBS, which has 133 schools, and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision). Baker’s proposal is aimed at creating a new subdivision, covering all sports, where the richest athletic departments in the so-called Power Five conferences — the Big Ten, Southeastern Conference, Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and Pac-12 — can operate differently than the rest. Conference realignment starting in 2024 will move the Pac-12 out of that group. The proposed shift would not require all members of a conference to be part of the new subdivision. Schools would be allowed to make that determination individually. Baker noted athletic budgets in Division I range from $5 million and $250 million annually, with 59 schools spending over $100 million annually and another 32 spending over $50 million. He said 259 Division I schools, however, spend less than $50 million on their athletic programs.

I can see this working in football, but for basketball I believe taking mid-majors out of the March Madness equation will hurt the tournament. The first 2 weekends and Cinderella stories is what people love about the process of getting to the Final Four.
Wish there was a way to avoid seeing the "rich get richer" and a method put in place where smaller schools can have some type of revenue sharing from the big schools.

Just saw this from ISUs collective today. Ours has only posted on social media once, so I’m not sure if our players are getting anything, but we might need to make friends with Kenny Kent if we’re going to hang on to all our talented pieces this off-season lol

It's obvious they need a bit more incentive than just "a great education on a wonderful campus."

This kind of stuff use to get schools the "Death Penalty." I never thought the NCAA would go in this direction. Watch the movie "Blue Chips" that should help people remember how things were done in the old days. These things are sad days for college athletics as a whole.

Interesting statistics. I’d love to know what our collective is up to. Haven’t seen anything from them since the initial announcement. Seems like they might be nothing more than providing access to Opendorse for our student athletes. If that is the case, we are waaaaayyy behind the 8 ball and going to struggle to sign and retain talented players.
Bradleys collective puts on golf outings and does other fundraisers to get money to athletes and ISU is handing out vehicles to players. It’s not impossible to win without those things, but it’s like playing with a hand tied behind your back for no reason when we have the fan bases and the community resources to generate that kind of support.
