Mid-week fiesta at home (6 p.m.) against Bellarmine. The Aces launched artillary at the Knights back in March, winning 14-2 in Louisville. I hardly expect that to happen twice but this is a nice chance for the bats to get into a groove ahead of Friday's opener against Bradley. Evansville will send graduate RHP John MacCauley (1-1, 7.58 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday night in his second start of the year. MacCauley has not allowed a run in his last 6.2 innings of work over his last two appearances. He tossed three perfect innings last Wednesday in UE's 4-1 win over Butler. ESPN+ for those who would rather watch baseball than complain about the transfer portal. I can watch and chew portal at the same time.

Not a real pretty win for the Hometown Heroes. Pitching was iffy but effective when necessary. First inning could have put it out of reach for UE but they didn't get that done.
6-5 with a nice save by Hardman.
Some seeing eye hits in the 7th doomed the Bells.

If we pick games apart, most of them have a less than pretty component. Sometimes a ball a few inches away from or closer to a shortstop's glove can separate pretty from brilliant. Seeing eyes are a nightmare or a dream come true. Putting this Aces team in perspective, their winning percentage is better than all but three MLB teams. It's a good team. The MVC isn't laughing at us on the diamond.

The prospective recruits are also paying attention. This team is heavily veteran and will be a lot different next year. But it's a place for grad-level pitchers to get another look from the scouts. Those pitchers are assets. They have inning behind them. I think these guys will get drafted: Nick Smith (he's good enough now to pitch High A ball) Eric Roberts (plays 3 positions well and has improved. Aluminum bat worries me) Simon Scherry (good range and good instincts) Chase Hug (he is a very good defensive player with good OB skills) Shallenberger would have been a shoo-in had he put up some numbers this year. Injuries on him. If not drafted, they can go the Tanner Craig route and sign a wannabe contract and see how it plays out in the Frontier. A year from now Donovan Schultz will get a look. The Valley holds its own against Northern teams, including the Big 10 and the MAC.

Last I checked, the MAC has a conference RPI a few notches above the OVC. Ball State is tied w/ Central MI for 2nd place, and was nothing but batting practice for ISU Tuesday in an 11-1 loss. This game should've been "Mercy Rule" in the 7th, but the HC's must've opted pre-game to go the full 9. I don't think the Cards used any pitchers w/ ERA below 10. Horrible...some of this could be attributed to losing their Pitching Coach 1 1/2 weeks ago. Cards have major issues...
***Check of BSU's roster shows 4 hitters over .300. You'd never known...

MAC has plenty of problems and the biggest one is how the Portal riddled their otherwise sound football programs. The 2020 mess left the BIG in sorry need of talent and they pillaged it. What that has to do with baseball or other sports might be an anecdote but that conference is far from ascending in recent years. The Michigan schools are not very good at all.
