Big series starting today against the Carbondale Fleabags. Taking 2 of 3 would be a giant leap. Pitching around the frost-belt region appears to have caught up to the hitting.

The good news is Shallenberger is back. The better news is that he has yanked a 2-run dinger off the Fleabags. Lookin' good so far. It's being live-streamed from Egypt.

Nice effort, nice win. I think the Fleabags are better than this, but tonight 10-2 doesn't prove that at all. Scherry is playing some pro-level shortstop.

Our record would be much better if Shallenberger wasn't out so long and also Smith wasn't hurt for at least 3 weeks

Our record would be much better if Shallenberger wasn't out so long and also Smith wasn't hurt for at least 3 Valley baseball is among the best in the mid-majors range. It is overall better than the Big 10 most years, and it's superior to the MAC and the OVC regularly. There are plenty of top players who WANT to play in the Valley and when Dallas Baptist was a member, a lot of guys loved facing them. Players love that challenge. That all the point, Valley pitching is slow to mature in the spring due to where the teams are located, but by the start of April, they are stretched out. Those 11-8 scores in March start being 6-1 scores by now. The more I watch the Aces, the more impressed I am with them and the league they play. I was slightly disappointed in what I thought was inferior lighting at Itchy Jones field at SIU. That program is almost legendary but it was clear the fielders were having trouble with balls above the lights. Braun Field at UE is a masterpiece, although I am no fan of plastic grass. Still, it is what it is.

Dropping this tweet by Anthony in the general baseball thread as it gives a great overview on the baseball and softball wins yesterday. Both were over good teams.
Note: In the softball game the Aces Weatherford pitched a complete game five hitter; while the SB hitters scored seven runs in five innings against two of Murray States better pitchers.

Midweek game against WKU: Aces up 10-5 in the top of the eight. Shallenberger with a home run and Hug with a bases loaded triple.
The Aces seem to be deep offensively down the order; but from someone that periodically follows them I wish their pitching (depth) was stronger.
Update: We hold on for the 10-8 win.

I think the pitching depth is good sometimes, a little shaky other times and dependent on defense a lot more of the time. That probably is fairly typical. I think the bullpen can be really tough against RH hitters but these guys are inclined to be a bit wild at times and with the aluminum bats, being wild is one thing, wild in the strike zone something else. UE is going to more than hold its own against righthanded pitching and struggle against lefties. I think the goal is always to take the series. In the Valley, that is always unpredictable. I never imagined the MVC standings being headed up by Sicko State. We shall see. Weekday games are peculiar. Bullpen piggybacking is never a bad idea for non-con. WKU beat them last week.

Next 2 weekends with series against Murray St and Indiana St will be huge -- going 4-2 would be great, then our final 3 weekends are against the bottom third of the MVC. Just need to be in the top 4 to avoid a 1st round MVC tournament game. RPI: #12 Ind St, #72 UE, #79 SIU, #85 Valpo, #90 Missouri St. MVC overall conference ranking: #9 Real time RPI: www.warrennolan.com/baseball/2023/rpi-live

Tuesday at 6 at home vs. Lipscomb. I think the pitching got beat up a little on Sunday, so we might see some other arms. MacCauley scheduled to start. He has never done that for the Aces before today. Dunkleberger, a lefty, will throw for the Lippers. The Lips have some hitters and some power bats. They are in the A-Sun (Bellarmine etc.) 21-19 and 13-5 in the conference. This will be a tough game for the Aces. lipscombsports.com/sports/baseball/stats

Shallenberger is out again. His dad had mentioned he hurt his ankle in the last series presumably in a collision. Hopefully it is not too serious and he doesn’t miss much time. Up 1-0 after four on only one hit (not a HR).

Up 1-0 after four on only one hit (not a HR). It was probably on the fly ball to LF with Borgstrom. I saw Shally limp a little on it but he stayed in the game. So it is probably sore. That was the ball that looked like nobody caught it, the guy rounded the bases and 5 minutes later, the ump signaled a catch.
