Ragland and a feel-good story about how his strategy is to tell us his team improved even if they lost their last game by 38 points. I like the way this guy talks but it's only because of blind optimism. You learn everything you want to know with these PR puff yarns.

I did like hearing that he has had the conversations and is expecting some to enter the portal it sounds like. The increased funding for the program was exciting to hear, although the information in the article couldn’t have possibly been more vague about what that means. I look forward to seeing who our P5 opponent will be this year. Sounds like it’ll be a driveable game. I’m hoping it’s a trip to Bloomington

I’m hoping it’s a trip to Bloomington Louisville or Vandy would be acceptable, though neither of them is in the IU or Purdue range. More funding to me seems like a commitment from the university to increase NIL money, which is way outside my scope of comprehension. I will say that Ragland was fairly non-committal on his opinion about the Portal. I get the sense that he feels like a lot of middies who are trying to stay afloat -- the process is murder. How you win at it is to trust other coaches. That is just not a workable plan for coaches who don't have a lot of staff and even less staff during the spring and summer months. But if it comes down to "buying" talent, we've seen how that works.

As stated int the CP article, Ragland wants to be a bit hush-hush about the portal guys he is after. I agree, with a projected 1500 guys going to the portal, there will be an oppty to give a decent player attention he might not be getting elsewhere. Stay focused and quietly go after the guys you want.

I thought the roster was full. Where will he put these portal players?

I thought the roster was full. Where will he put these portal players? 5 players left today. Three open scholarships now. It was full 24 hours ago.

One more .... Logan McIntire. I pissed off his dad with a Twitter comment and he said that Logan is in the Portal.

I agreed with you in not being surprised to see Logan leave and don't believe you meant anything personal. But I would likely be upset too if I were his Dad, as it was most likely an emotional time for players and families. I feel for good kids, like his son, Preston Phillips, who gave his best for 2 years, and the others who are being "advised" to leave. It's the downside to this new era. UE needs a massive upgrade in talent that the portal may provide, but to get that, some guys have to leave. This is the new normal now. These kids leaving by all accounts were good representatives for Evansville, and hopefully get offers from new schools.

Regardless of record, these kids represented our program with the upmost class, and the least we can do is show the same towards them. It may be part of the game now, but it certainly doesn't make it easier, especially on the parents.

The only real worm that's turned is that until a couple of years ago, it was the coach who got the boot, not the players. If a player wanted out or was tossed out, he usually had to wait a year. In the case of Dru Smith, we all know how they tried shenanigans pinning a coaching change to a player's actual skill profile. So what's new is that the coaches have more exert control over the results than they did. Ragland can't go 5-27 again and convince anybody he's the right hire. He has to let the Portal stabilize and that will take a couple of months.
The hope is that they will make better decisions on their recruiting. The modern approach to gleaning prep academies for me-first-to-the-rim superstars might be OK at P6 schools that can afford to gamble and miss.
In the end, we may see a better product once the system in place organizes into some kind of stoic board of "directors" who will regulate Texas Southern but not Baylor.

Better recruiting decisions? Ragland was handed a dumpster fire and was hired way too late to make any meaningful impact in recruiting. Not fair to pin this on the current staff 🤦♂️
