they stated in January that his recruitment was “wide open”. It must be that way because all the P5s have backed off imo. Hopefully that works out for us if there is still mutual interest.

I imagine that schools who are not going after him hard are the ones who evidently believe he's not inclined to be all that loyal. I know that if I were recruiting for UE, I'd want some comfort in knowing the guy is there to help rebuild the program, not just use it for a place to audition for a better position. I find it odd that these mountain-state schools are on this list.

If we get a talented player and they stay for one year only but help us go from last place to top 4 in the MVC, that’s going to pay massive dividends down the road in recruiting, even if we fall back to an 8th place team when they leave. Take any talent you can get and keep trying to improve the image of the program. With that said, it sounds like we’re no longer pursuing Sultan. Time to turn to the portal for an impact big.

Well yeah, we (as fans) will take anybody who comes along. I didn't speak for the fans but for the people who run the program who maybe don't feel like they are used car salesmen. It's one thing for a blog to organize a basketball team, fully something else for an actual coaching staff to look at who is trying to squeeze some NIL out of them. Try to look at it from their perspective. And Ragland isn't a "beggar." He can find good players who aren't trying to game him. Is this kid doing that? I would wager that ALL the top 150 kids are doing that to everybody, waiting for Kansas or Carolina to up the ante.

I would wager that ALL the top 150 kids are doing that to everybody, waiting for Kansas or Carolina to up the ante. From a rebuilding coaches perspective, you take the most talented players you can get. That’s the name of the game now in the transfer portal era. He’s not going to back off a kid because he thinks he’s going to leave after having a 1st team MVC caliber season. He’s just going to make sure he’s recruiting extra hard while that kids having that season so he can replace him in the off season. If the kid has a Deandre Williams - Coach Roy type handler that’s “trying to squeeze as much NIL as they can out of you”, that’s a bit different story, and I’d think we want to avoid those kinds of kids because they’re typically not high character individuals meant for a school like UE. I don’t think the talented players were recruiting like Sultan, Chuck Bailey, Joey Hart, etc. fit that bill. They do all fit the “good enough to transfer to a P5 after two years” bill though, and we can’t be afraid of that when recruiting. Considering we already have one commit that’s good enough to fit that description, i don’t think that’s a concern for the staff like you imply it is.

It could be that the staff thought they needed a pf, but when Trey (possibly) became available, they backed off Sultan.
*just thinking out loud

I think Trey and Toumi are similar players in what they try to do. The question is, do you really want to invest in a big guy in the middle when so few of them are available? You don't want to get caught adding a Peace when at the end of it, you gave him the scholarship that should have gone to a guy who can actually help you?
But there is no doubt that a 6-10 guy with some moves makes this team a lot closer to Bradley than Backwater. I'd personally go after a half-dozen guys like Toumi than try to land some huge inside guy whose main attribute is a 13-inch vertical leap.
There is no one-size-fits-all. Every team has its character. Ragland is obviously looking for some players and he will find some of them. I think a couple of decent players will show up on the doorstep sometime early in the summer. We will be pretty excited about them, as we always are. I do know this -- when a coach has to stash four guys on the redshirt squad out of the 12 he has available, something has gone wrong.
If there are players out there who are happier playing for Ragland than Coach Crush, I am sure they are already having conversations with the players. These guys all know what's what in the game. They keep in touch with each other.

I guess I'm missing something, but who is Trey that we are talking about. If its Trey Hall he is no longer on the team.

See the Trey Hall thread at: purpleaceplace.freeforums.net/thread/1494/trey-hall?page=1In a nutshell PurpleAce heard that he is playing next year (for us) - not sure that has been confirmed though. Note: Let’s try to make future comments on Trey in his thread and leave this thread for comments and updates on Sultan as much as possible. I hope this helps.

The reason Trey is mentioned is because one of us said they stopped pursuing Sultan because of him. Having to negotiate 2 threads to get to the same point is like seeing the same Twitter picture 8 times in a row. General recruiting will take on manifold points of view.
