I have heard he is playing next year and will have 3 years eligibility. Anyone else hear this and how does that change our recruiting?

Especially if he comes back as a walk on with an academic scholly. But that would give us another “big” that could really sure up the front line.

I haven't heard anything about this but I have always had a feeling that this would be the case. When the announcement was first made it just didn't seem like the sentence ended in a period. I would be happy to have him back on the team. Recruiting someone with equal talent wouldn't be easy. If he used the year away to advance his education and to mature, he and the Aces will be all the better for it.

What have we ever seen from Trey to prove recruiting someone with equal talent would be hard? Nothing against him, but I haven’t heard good things from people on the old staff about his talent/development. I’d be shocked if he is back in an Aces uniform next year, and I don’t think the new staff will have a problem finding someone of equal/greater talent.

Okay, YOUR INSIGHT MAY BE RIGHT. I have an opinion. You have an opinion. I really don't care what the "old staff" thought about him. The old staff was run out of town and it wasn't because they were brilliant. I hope you are right and Rags easily finds someone with equal or greater talent than Trey Hall. That would be super spiffy. I want you to be right. But until you are, all you have is an opinion just like me. A suggestion: Dig into the archives and see what others here were saying about Trey Hall before Licky Light put him in the dog house. I'm not the only one who saw the potential. But let's go further. If Trey recognized that he needed to step back and focus on his education, my hat is off to him. That is what character looks like. I can appreciate someone who wants to be better at the things that matter most. Forgiveness and second chances. Whoa! I don't just give lip service to those concepts. I believe in them. I won't let what the old staff said about him two years ago be my guiding light today. Different day, different Trey. Let me know how much more insight you need.

Trey’s Twitter feed (@treyhall_) says “ UE Men’s Basketball”. Not sure if that is a sign or if he never changed it.
I would gladly welcome him back (if he is ready to come back). Obviously he might not be guaranteed a scholarship depending on how things work out.

I will agree 100 percent with you Whiskers, or damus, if you prefer. While we may have butted heads over many things on this board, this is one that I can get behind. Trey deserves the chance to come back if he feels he is ready. He would give us what we are sorely lacking, but the rest of the Valley teams seem to have, a stretch 4. I will say, I also would take little of what the “Butler dream staff” has to say with regards to any of these players seriously. They were released for a reason.

I agree on the statement of the Butler dream staff, but I think they’re right on this one. Ragland had an entire summer with him, so I guess we’ll find out this spring if he agrees with them or not. I’m down for whoever Ragland wants to build this program for the future, but I’m not holding my breath on Trey. I was as excited for Trey to join the program as the rest of us, but sometimes evaluations of high schoolers don’t materialize into production in college. So far, I haven’t seen anything that leads me to believe he’s the 3 star we thought we were getting. I genuinely hope I’m wrong, but I think Trey rejoining the program as an impact player is just a pipe dream at this point. As far as whiskers statement on admiring him for making the decision to step back and focus on academics, I’m glad he’s focusing on academics, and I hope is learning and growing in his time away from basketball, but if you believe he made that decision himself….. I’ve got some beachfront property in Nebraska to sell you. I wish Trey the best wherever he ends up, but I am seriously doubtful it will be with us next year.

I have heard he is playing next year and will have 3 years eligibility. Anyone else hear this and how does that change our recruiting? When did Trey originally enroll at UE? In regards to the eligibility timeline, athletes playing in a division 1 program have 5 calendar years to play 4 seasons of sports starting from the time they enroll as a full-time student. The additional Covid year of eligibility would alter the rule by a year, but I'm unsure if Trey would be eligible for 3 more years.

As far as Trey returning, it's not like he has much of a resume to show a prospective Portal guide. If he's at UE, he's talking to the team and the coaches. I don't know if he's allowed to scrimmage with them, but if he's not playing ball, then it doesn't matter if he leaves or stays. At the worst, he's a 6-foot-9 guy they can bring in for some minutes. I'd try to keep the guy for that reason alone.

I agree, if Trey is doing better with academics, good for him, regardless of his motivation for doing that. An education is more likely to help them than making pro $$. I also agree that Rags and the other coaches are in better position than most of us to make a decision if Trey has a future with the team. Looking forward to seeing our upcoming recruiting and roster moves in the next few months. And that is when we’ll get a better sense of how valuable Rags is as a head coach and his skill as a recruiter. Along with recruiting prowess of the assistant coaches, of course.
