Might as well split this off from the portal thread. We now have 4 new head coaches in the league.
Southern Illinois hired Scott Nagy from Wright State
UIC hired Rob Eshan, an assistant at Stanford.
Missouri State brought back Cuonzo Martin.
Drake may have made the biggest hire of them all. Finally getting McCollum into the D-1 ranks. I have said this before, nothing against Rags, but this was my choice because of his head coaching history. Apparently Ziggy and company felt different. I guess we will get to see who was right in the coming years.

I guess we will get to see who was right in the coming years. I don’t think Ziggy and Co felt different. I think McCollum felt different. He’s been very selective and turned down multiple D1 jobs prior to the Drake job. I’d be shocked if he was willing to jump into our dumpster fire and was passed over. He likely never gave us any serious consideration imo. Tough pill to swallow as an Aces fan, but that’s just the reality of it. We were one of many to be rejected by him. Good for him though. Played his cards right and found a situation where he can have immediate success in his home state.

One of the few times I had inside information was that McCullom was still interested when we decided on Ragland. No idea if he would have actually accepted, but that is what I was told. We were a dumpster fire, but he was very familiar with the Ford Center as well as the city, and like Shertz, he could have brought his guys and immediately stopped the bleeding at least.
I think he backed out at Missouri State because he was afraid they were going FBS. If they do, all of their resources will be marked for football. He wants to be at a basketball first school.
I don't want to sound like I am critical of the hire. Ragland has exceeded my expectations so far, he is arguably one the classiest coaches in the game and he bleeds Evansville. Drake is certainly in better shape than we were 2 years ago, but they have spent much of the last 50 years as the league dumpster fire.

McCollum is interesting because it re-enforces our perception that more new hires for mid-majors are probably going to come from the D-2 level. The lateral move would be based on something different from basketball.
Assistants at P4 programs are still making much more as assistants than they would get at D-1 schools that have to fight to even get an NCAA bid.
In any case, a guy who is happy being an assistant is probably an assistant who has real duties that are essential for program health. Anybody can sit on the bench and wear a pair of sneakers. "Your job is to ask the scorer how many fouls No. 42 has." (I can do that!).
A guy who intrigues me is Greg Tonagel at Indiana Wesleyan.
Either way, I hope we are long past the era of finding recycled Todd Lickliters hanging around who have no energy for the high-octane sport this has become.

This whole Schertz-SLU-ISU thing keeps taking turns and twists. Schertz has been as tight-lipped as they come, yet "leaks" keep coming out of the SLU side. Now, Indianapolis Star reporter Greg Doyel claims to have had a conversation with Schertz where he stated he and the team was gone to SLU. Schertz quickly called him out on X.
Meanwhile, I think everyone in Terre Haute and Vigo County has contributed to the NIL to keep this team there another year. As much as I like curb-stomping the Sycamores, to lose the opportunity of this team coming back may be the biggest nut-kick in the history of the NCAA. It's simply wrong that another mid-major can swoop in with a Richie Rich and buy a team that was grown and supported from nothing by another school. It would be hard to take if it was IU or another true power program, but another MM just makes it downright rotten. As long as they are parked in the A-10, they are nothing but a mid-major, no matter how much of dad's money Junior Chaifetz gets to play with.

Gotta say, I know Doyel a little and while he is fairly strident in his opinions, he has way enough material that he doesn't have to invent stories or make up quotes. So I am leaning a little towards him over any denials that Schertz is making.

Doyel is an idiot. He is on record for not believing Aaron Rodgers had a torn achilles tendon.

That may be true but he's not going to invent conversations. That's flat-out libel. Aaron Rodgers is also an idiot.

Why am I picturing the Sycamore band belting out 'When the Saints go Marching In' as soon as tomorrow's game is over. Hope Shertz stays and that most of their players do also. Has a coach ever moved and taken his whole starting lineup with remaining eligibility with him? It will be interesting to see how it plays out.

I spoke to a friend of mine who lives in St Louis and is well connected to the university. Pretty sure there is a contract waiting for him and a number of his players will be joining him in Cardinal country next year.

Exactly. Going to SLU and they are banking on his success to take them into the Big East within 5 years. It will be a win-win for SLU and the Big East (as that gives them 6 Midwest schools.)

I find it hard to believe that Schertz directly told a sports reporter that he is "going to SLU and bringing the team with him." (or maybe E-Villans original post on this is incorrect?)
Doyel is simply trying to stay relevant on the ISU story and maybe a bit jealous that McAfee has an open door on interviews with Cream Abdul Jabbar/Milk Chamberlain.

Not inclined to dispute any of this, other than to say, I know Doyel well enough to believe he isn't going to invent an interview. He just won't. If he did that, I will be severely critical of him and hope he gets the sh**ty end of history's final story. But the idea that Schertz is "taking his team with him" is the product of a lot of manufactured conversations. Avila was interviewed on some TV sports blog and used the term "next year" several times when discussing ISU sports. Doyel staying relevant would be possible but it isn't like ISU is a closely kept secret around Indy, where the NCAA has its phone numbers written on the Star's walls.
