Fatigue-related decisions. Seton Hall's early forced rotation ultimately was a blessing, as it wore down ISU. Keep in mind they go what, 6 1/2 deep? Did you see the size difference in the Seton Hall backcourt? WEAR DOWN...these weren't 7' 170 lb Morman's! Franschilla echoed the PHYSICAL play throughout the game. It takes a toll...especially after only a day's rest.
Avila better hire a personal trainer and build some muscle definition if he expects to be successful in the heavy-duty trenches! He learned a few things from getting those goggles knocked off his face multiple times...that's why we have SUMMER'S. Chisel your body, Dude!
Swope - get those knee issues (torn meniscus/cartilage) fixed, P/T by therapists who know their stuff and come back NEXT year w/ a vengeance.
WE v. ME - the ultimate trial of a player AND coach w/the NIL..."Grass isn't always greener" wisdom?

Larry Bird and Kevin Durant never had muscle and they were just fine. This isn’t boxing or the NFL.

Any idea what shortened LB's playing career? INSIDE PLAY...stress on his BACK. Bird was no twinky and generally held his own against SIMILAR sized opponents. But the NBA big boyz aren't 6'9" 220, are they? Bird didn't live on the perimeter...and neither does Avila, who's "farm boy" body won't facilitate a marked degree of success v. upper echelon NCAA Div I interior bruisers. Seton Hall is "Exhibit #1."
Durant & Bird are like comparing oranges w/ lemons...

"CHRONIC BACK PROBLEMS"...exactly! Any idea of HOW this developed? Did anyone see Avila "posting strong" inside v. Seton Hall w/ reasonable success?

"CHRONIC BACK PROBLEMS"...exactly! Any idea of HOW this developed? Did anyone see Avila "posting strong" inside v. Seton Hall w/ reasonable success? Agreed, Avila and Hughes would be much better off by spending a large portion of their off season in the weight room adding upper body bulk

Hughes has a youthful body...but could reasonably become an MVC force! They both need to follow those Charles Atlas ads re: "How to stop getting sand kicked into your eyes on the beach!"

"CHRONIC BACK PROBLEMS"...exactly! Any idea of HOW this developed? Did anyone see Avila "posting strong" inside v. Seton Hall w/ reasonable success? "Chronic back problems" is what is pabulum'd out to scribes who wouldn't know a vertebrae from a psoas muscle, so that's what it became. It's like pitchers back in the day who got a "sore arm" and we all just knew what that meant. Now the semi-literate pundits have this science they think makes them medical experts. Tall men who spend a lot of time diving for loose balls are typically at higher risk than us shorter fat people who sit in the seats and yell at players to dive for loose balls.

...and LB spent a fair amount of time on the floor 1) diving for loose balls and 2) collecting offensive (charge) fouls. You don't have to be Galileo to understand the physics of #2 on a 6'9" 220 lb body. Then add low posts v. players 50+ lbs heavier while positioning on BOTH offense & defense...
Btw, since incurring a ruptured L4 disc 14 yrs ago as an IHSAA Baseball umpire, I've been exposed to "chronic back pain." Daily morning stretching/leg raises/cruches, Voltaren & sometimes Hydro-codeine/Acetaminophen plus walking 30 min w/ a Breg back brace keep the ol' dude rolling.
