Between the increasingly annual screwing MVC-level teams are taking on Selection Sunday to the millions the P-5 are pouring into these NIL deals, it's getting harder and harder to be a collegiate sports fan. I have learned to be interested in the games, happy when they win, not too disappointed when they lose ... there is really no alternative. The dealmakers are counting on people like me caring who wins the thing. I only know who I want to see lose. As a Reds fan, it's frustrating to see the Dodgers sink a billion dollars into a roster but it's satisfying to know that they still ain't won anything yet.

The way things are going in the portal if Schertz leaves USIb and it looks more likely since they didn’t get an NCAA bid, the whole SIU team could transfer to Terre Haute and just change jerseys.

Several UIC players are also announcing. I did see IUPUI will have another roster purge and we've yet to hear from the rest of these conferences. The OVC got pillaged last year. Not sure they can take it again. I suppose this is all somewhat amusing from NCAA HQ in Indy but it's killing the programs who are trying to cement some strategies for selling season tickets next fall. Nobody wants to watch a bunch of walkons and second-tier JUco transfers.

What a mess! This whole NIL and portal transfers have hit us at our lowest - will be difficult for all but the Power teams who will just simply trade talent. Those sitting there with the money to pay for the most proven players and coaches will have it made; while the rest of us face total revision of our team every year. Rebuilding, which is the stage we are in, will drain resources and, ultimately, fans. Poor ISU is probably going to suffer this after such an amazing year-I feel really bad for their fans. If we lose Ben and Chuck we have just taken a step forward and now will take two back....what a mess!

No loyalty to anything anymore. That’s what you get when you allow children to run things. Every year I watch a little bit less and less of college basketball and it’s getting to the point where I’m about ready to just completely turn it off. It’s saddens me where we are at right now..

Loyalty is long lost in this world. True in college basketball and in the corporate/work world. I'm about to the point I'll spend my season ticket money on high school games.

What’s even worse imo is you now have teams that refuse to play in tournaments (NIT) and individuals who refuse to play (Ben?) even if their team does because they have other interests. Are college sports as we know them ready to implode? Possibly! Name me one college elsewhere in the world that fields college athletics. Many of the best athletes come here because we offer the best competition and a free education.
As we move further into play for play sports I see cities and town like Evansville left out in the cold. We have not been good at attracting and sustaining professional sports. Hockey and independent baseball has found an audience but even that comes and goes.
What happens to high school sports. Many of the best students play sports in hopes of getting a college scholarship or they dream of playing professionally even though only about 2% make it to the pros. Our public school systems were always the feeders of our colleges. But even that started changing years ago when prep schools and travel teams came into being. Now fan attendance and enthusiasm seems to be a thing of the past.
Be careful what you wish for you might just get it.

College sports as we know them emerged from the ashes in 1978.
High school sports as we know them came about when counties decided to build "Central High" out in the middle of a corn field. That essentially killed public school sports.
After that, the "Christian" schools realized they could recruit anybody they wanted, manage their enrollments and win everything.
Do you realize that Blackhawk Christian in Fort Wayne has a 35-2 tournament (that's sectionals on to the state) basketball record since 2019? They don't have to beat everybody, but they are a man in a boy's workshop when it comes to the tournament.
Indy Chatard has won the state football title SEVENTEEN times since 1983. Carmel has 107 state titles in all sports. ONE HUNDRED AND SEVEN.

Um yeah ... it did have something to do with the rant about whether sports as we knew/know them are the same as they were back in the day and whether we should stop cheering for college teams and start cheering for high school teams, which apparently have more credibility. I only replied to that perspective. It's otherwise just another nail in the building.
