I’ll add one more thought about the defensive effort during this Illinois road trip. I’ve seen way too many UE players go for shot fakes and fly-by players on close outs the past 2 games. Then, for some reason tonight, UE had numerous players cheat for steals on the perimeter and take themselves out of the play. That’s poor fundamentals that can’t happen a week before March. The way this team guards screens has to either change or significantly improve in a short amount of time. Switches are slow or lead to mismatches that are allowing guards to beat our taller guys to the bucket. One time tonight, UIC ran a weak slip screen on an out of bounds play under the basket. UE switched it for no reason and Haffner ends up stuck guarding 6’9” Smallwood and he scores an easy deuce. I've noticed the same thing regarding our defensive tendencies. We had a ton of issues guarding the pick and roll with their 5 man (Skobalj). It looked like we were only switching 1 through 4, but we did a terrible job fighting over screens to stay with our man when the center screened. Lots of blown assignments on weak-side rotations too, everything was a mess. We also have been running some sort of diamond zone for baseline out-of-bounds plays all year. I don't know if the issue is the scheme or the execution, but we've given up far too many easy buckets/mismatches out of it all season.

The bottom line is we are better than last year by quite a bit because we were so bad last year. We still have a long, long way to go and hopefully next year will be much better than this year. We need to keep those guys who can help us win and recruit guys that are better than those who graduate or decide to move on to another program. Winning road games in the conference is very tough and we have to play very solid on both ends for 40 minutes. We did not do that at Ill State or tonight and we lost both games. We were competitive which is better than last year but not good enough to get to where we want to be.
Lets hope we can improve and try to pick up a win or two before St Louis. No games will be easy and we have to have great effort and play to get another W vs some good competition.
Go Aces !

We have maybe 3 guys who can guard man to man. That doesn’t bode well for a team that switches everything. Not sure why we went away from isolation Ben, he finish over anyone; kenny he can finish and pass out, Tanner, he’s craftier than anyone on the team. That’s it, that’s the offense I would run down the stretch.

We play like a team that is not one bit interested in winning! So tired of losing games we should be winning! Oh, well, guess it's time for our usual, "Wait till next year." Forget St. Louis...we'll just be the usual ole Evansville that we have been there for years! Do I sound a bit bitter? You're darn right, I am! Is this some form of self-therapy? Props to the other team sometimes will help.

I can easily remember just a short while ago we'd watch our offense weave sideways for 25 seconds before anyone thought about where the basket was. I'm elated with this team and the coaching staff, both are new to top tiered BB conferences, but by golly, I think they're both up to it. If you want instant gratification buy a Purdue shirt.

I don’t know who teaches defense because we’ve given up open 3s all season long. With our height inside capable of blocks, I don’t understand why we double the ball that allow a couple quick passes for open 3s. Hire a defensive minded assistant. We score enough points to be competitive, but our defense stinks too often. Defense wins championships. Always has. It’s just not very exciting to play D? What’s the problem?

UIC had four 3pointers within 90 secs that killed the rally we had going. Would have to go back and watch what happened defensively or if it was just Rivera being in the zone for a minute.

I actually went back and watched that immediately after the game because I knew that was the point the game turned in UICs favor. The first 3 were all due to unnecessary help defense when UIC drove in the lane that led to open looks for 3. The fourth one was in transition and I think Rivera was just hot by that point. Cam closed out pretty strongly on him and he still drained it. I agree with those questioning our defensive approach. Giving up good looks from 3 is just not a good concept. Surely our paint defense couldn’t be bad enough to give up more points without helping than we are with the open 3 looks.

One bright spot is that we are all disappointed about losing a road game and expected to win this game. That is improvement, in of itself. We just have to keep moving in the right direction and figure a way to close out these close games.
Satisfied - no; Improving - yes (from last year); Where we want to be - No.
Any post season tournament is still probably better than most expected at the beginning of the year (after the previous two years). Need to find a way to eke out another win or two to make us postseason eligible; but, of course, I am ok with winning them all, as well.

Many are here at the beginning of the season thought winning 10-12 games at most would be fantastic. Then we did great in Non-Con and most changed to expecting 20 wins.
