3 point shooting will be the key for us.Haffner needs to start hitting at a higher percentage
We hope he starts matching the 3pt 43% production he had at EIU. If he did that as a freshman, I feel it is only a matter of time before he finds his stroke. I feel like he has forced/rushed a few shots with us.
In all honesty, it can’t be easy living in your dad’s shadow, knowing everything you do is being compared to him, and trying to “live up” to what he accomplished. Give him a chance to settle in. I’ll take less points and more hard nosed defense with our scoring right now.

He hops into his shot and has been off balance when coming off a screen or on the move. When his feet are set and is a catch and shoot option, he has been very good (not sure where those advanced stats are but I’d bet on that fact between stationary and moving shots) Plus, Marty almost certainly made him shoot while on balance, so let’s hope as he gets more comfortable that he settles into his footwork, and ultimately better %’s. He can help us win games, we just haven’t seen his true upside yet.

I would say there are several factors at play on this in no particular order: 1. Shadow/Self imposed pressure 2. New to UE, new coaching staff/offensive scheme, new rims, new home court 3. Tougher competition perhaps 4. EI offensive scheme..was it to always set screens with Haffner being the main focus to get the open shot like Colt Ryan, Ryan Taylor or DJ Balentine 5. Defense..is he exerting more pressure on the other end of the court based on our defensive scheme vs what he had to do at EI We are only 20-25% into our schedule and it's early in the season as other posters have noted. I am confident he will be fine once he settles into things.

As noted in other threads, our 6-0 record is mostly against some not so good teams, which I am sure other Valley fan boards are mentioning. But let's face it, our 2 best players from last year have not been on the court for some of our big runs this year.
Key to win is forcing their guards Mason and Lee into turnovers, while controlling Clay and Benson on the boards. No more Primm to worry about spending 10 seconds in the lane.
UE for a close win.

This one is going to be very tough - but I agree with 65, our best chance is to try and wear them down with your depth. To win games like this on the road, it's going to take a phenomenal defensive / rebounding effort. Hopefully we can find a way to make that happen and pull off another game we aren't expected to win! Rags told me before the Chattanooga game that they were going to press the action and wear them down since he felt like we had a deeper bench. So I could see the same thing here.

3 point shooting will be the key for us.Haffner needs to start hitting at a higher percentage 3 point defense as well. If you look at Kenpom, we’re ranked top 75 in the country in every defensive metric besides 3 pt defense. We’re 289th in that. If we can figure out our issues defending the 3 point line, we’re going to be very hard to score on. There were quite a few times we were late covering the three in Chattanooga. Obviously overall we played quite well but three point defense is definitely an area that we do need to improve. Some of it was Chattanooga’s good ball movement and reversals and other times it reminded me of Marty’s teams where we were late with the help side defense from our defensive rotations trying to get back to the shooter.

He definitely was frustrated at times in Chattanooga and Rags would “console” him when he came to the bench.

Aces44, that is a good point/catch as you are absolutely correct that on most of the misses in Chattanooga he was moving and not set. Some of that was because the defense was closely trailing him but we should be able to work on getting him more free for an open set shot.

Haha on Primm in the lane. He spent so much time there they should have given him a mop to wipe up the sweat.

Okay, to me the key will always be how well the Aces play D. I am confident we can get enough offense to win…just need to apply the same defensive pressure this group has shown so far. Getting a win to start MVC play on the road will be huge. Come on, Aces…TCB!

UE's defense is clearly better than in the past, mainly because these guys are quicker and have longer wingspans. The clinic on this was the Ball State beatdown. The secret to any of this is, and I say this often, how the officials call the game. If they continue a trend of nickpicking teams into the double bonus with 4 minutes left in the first half, there's no way to recruit or coach your way out of that. Valley game refs have ruined more games than bad play has. But they have a nice corner on the market when it comes to standing in front of the monitor for 5 minutes deciding whose finger the ball hit on its way out of bounds.
