Looking over the team stats and what a joy to see the advantage we have in FG%, rebounds, turnovers, assists, steals, blocks...and even our 70% FT rate is good.
Haffner hasn't locked in on the 3pointer yet (7-24, 29%), but only figure it is matter of time before he finds the range (as he was 44-103, 43% at EIU)
Going to be quite a game at Missouri State.

I am real interested to see what the opening line will be. Is Vegas giving out free money again?
My guess is UE +9.5

A Missouri State fan posted the following on the MVC Board today. The Bears have looked really solid so far. I was hoping for a little easier opening game but maybe the timing is right for this one.
Bears are actually kinda hurting right now with depth at the guards and on the wing. They've been playing all year w/o their 4th and 5th guards in transfer Nick Kramer [SLU] and freshman Davion Hill. Kramer is an undisclosed injury and Hill appears to have had some transfer credit issues , although unconfirmed, but Ford has said both will be available 2nd semester. In the meantime freshman Tyler Bey has a knee bruise and is out till then as well and last night starters Damian Mayo and Alston Mason left the game with injuries, although Mason made it back , but Mayo was in a boot. This after just getting Chance Moore back from a high ankle sprain. So for at least the next couple weeks and unfortunately the 1st 2 Valley games , Bears will be 3-4 players short and all perimeter guys. Suspect we'll have to play some larger lineups at times , so will see how that goes. Probably best time to catch the Bears right now.

This could be huge for us, and two early season victories over two teams that are considered top 5 by most people would be huge. However, if we win, you all know that the excuses are going to fly about this.

I am real interested to see what the opening line will be. Is Vegas giving out free money again? My guess is UE +9.5 Kenpom says MSU 75 - UE 66, so your guess is likely going to be very close to correct. Looks like the Aces will continue to print money for those of us that believe in them.

I am encouraged after looking at MSU's stats and box scores, for the same reason I thought we had a good chance against Chattanooga. Bench and depth.
UE has 11 players with 9 pts or more on the season (14 players with 7 pts or more). MSU has 9 players with 7 pts or more on the season (no other players have scored, just 9 players have scored this year).
I noticed the same thing with Chattanooga, their first 6 or 7 were either big or physical, and several of them were both. And Chattanooga beat Louisville on the road ya'll.
MSU looks a lot like Chattanooga to me, their first 6 or 7 are going to be tough.

This one is going to be very tough - but I agree with 65, our best chance is to try and wear them down with your depth. To win games like this on the road, it's going to take a phenomenal defensive / rebounding effort. Hopefully we can find a way to make that happen and pull off another game we aren't expected to win!

I think we have the advantage in depth and coaching. Hopefully that’s enough to put us over the top in this one. I think Ragland has done a great job gameplanning and making in game adjustments so far this year, and it’s going to take a great game plan to win this one imo.

3 point shooting will be the key for us.Haffner needs to start hitting at a higher percentage 3 point defense as well. If you look at Kenpom, we’re ranked top 75 in the country in every defensive metric besides 3 pt defense. We’re 289th in that. If we can figure out our issues defending the 3 point line, we’re going to be very hard to score on.

If we can figure out our issues defending the 3 point line, we’re going to be very hard to score on. Based on what I've seen and the interview Coach Ragland had with Jevin after the Ball State game, I have a feeling that 3P% might stay in the upper half of the nation. Our defensive philosophy seems to be help the paint, which leads to more turnovers but also more open 3s. Given our personnel and our ability to block shots down low, I really like this scheme. The problem is of course that a worse team can get hot and shoot 50%+ from 3 to beat us. I'm willing to live with that, though, especially since there was research done a few years ago by Ken Pomeroy that showed defense only has a 28% impact on a team's 3P%. For some context I believe it was around 50% for 2P%, so almost twice as much impact.

We hope he starts matching the 3pt 43% production he had at EIU. If he did that as a freshman, I feel it is only a matter of time before he finds his stroke. I feel like he has forced/rushed a few shots with us.
