Interesting article in the Courier. Evansville will sell 6 miles of streets to help pay for updates to Ford Center. I've never heard of anything like this before.

The Indiana Toll Road went through this when Daniels was governor. The highway from Illinois across N. Indiana was leased to an outfit from, I think, Spain. That operation went belly-up a few years ago and I don't know what became of the contract. The outfit leasing the highway just doubled the tolls and didn't actually do much else. No idea who would lease a street and what they plan to do with it -- turn it into a parking lot and charge rent? That document is what is wrong with America. I await the story on ramifications.

My gut feeling is this is going to be a disaster. Sounds like Evansville has run out of money.

I see N. Main from Lloyd to Morgan Ave (Bosse Field) is on there. Wonder how much money they wasted on developing and installing the poorly designed street and bike lanes on North Main.

Am I the only one who finds this vague at best? What is the benefit for the "lessee"? Naming rights? So, hypothetically, North Main could become Old National Drive?
I get leasing the toll road out since the lessee recouped the toll revenue, but I see no benefit to this other than naming rights, which would be a complete nightmare. What happens when the lease period runs out..new name? It's hard enough keeping up with the current names of arenas and ballparks, I can't imagine when it constantly affects addresses.
I don't want to turn this political, but we have a mayoral election in less than 2 months and I have no idea where any of the candidates stand on anything. Just road signs around town. There are a lot of issues that someone needs to start questioning these candidates about. I am also curious about these so-called emergency repairs to the Ford Center.

If the city wants upgrades to Ford Center, why not just ask the people who might care about a street to just donate to the Ford Center instead of participating in some peculiar "street leasing" contest? The Ford Center doesn't need filtered-down money from private businesses as much as it needs the money directly. I assume a ribbon message board generates income, so asking private income to fund a project that promotes private income ... how many people get their cut of that pie before the dollar invested is actually only worth 12 cents?
If this is just a clever way of making the city the center of some kind of trend towards advertising almost everything, I have a better idea:
Let's just rename the team the State Farm Insurance Evansville Aces.

Im no political finance expert, but it seems to me like it’s a really convoluted way of the Evansville redevelopment commission investing into the Ford Center instead of the city. I’m guessing nothing changes at all with the roads and it’s just a strange way for them to secure bonds/loans to pay for the upgrades. I could be completely wrong on that, but that’s what I’m guessing.

Probably headed this way, similar to how pro soccer teams have a major sponsor logo on their uniforms. Does anyone know details of the contract that gets the NIKE logo on just about every college teams uniform? Is that an exclusive?

Besides putting a better product on the floor and thus more people in seats, what needs upgrading at the Ford Center? It's only 12 years old. As for selling streets, it seems bizarre and is another example of how I really don't understand anything anymore.

As for selling streets, it seems bizarre and is another example of how I really don't understand anything anymore. Not being at all literate in what makes technology work, I do know that the things that go into a "machine" now are a lot more advanced than the "machine" is. Which is why companies keep upgrading their websites, so as to allow for new software to work better inside an old framework. That taps me out on it, mostly, but a guy told me once: You wouldn't expect an oooga horn to work very well on a car that goes 105 miles an hour. So the building isn't the problem, it's that the people who keep inventing software expect the people who bought the hardware to keep up with them. I guess that's capitalism. We are evidently in a world where nobody wants to pay more taxes to get the same stuff they expected to get in the past. But again, if you want corporate money to invest in public projects, why not just get all the money instead of forming up some kind of bartering system? I will trade you a cow for your pig because if I sell the pig, I can get another cow.

A company must be going around the MVC saying to each one their scoreboard ranks twelfth because of their inferior size and video resolution, and that they are losing recruiting wars because of it. If we only had Hulman Center's recently installed upgrades we would have surely beaten them 3 times last year instead of vice-versa.

The only two "upgrades" the FC needs is to correctly handle the seats in the endzone. Should have retractable rows that extend all the way to the floor like almost every other stadium in the country. I know this won't happen because it would require them to lower the floor, which will never happen.
The other upgrade is the basketball that is played on the court by the Aces. That's the only upgrade I care about.

This is one of the weirdest local government stories I have heard of. Apparently there is no money or borrowing authority for repairs and this is a “creative” way to raise money without waiting for a bond referendum that voters might not pass anyway. I could be completely wrong but it sounds to me like the streets are immaterial - it could have been zoo animals or trees at Wesselman Park - but the streets are a tangible asset for which the redevelopment commission can sell bonds, as opposed to the Ford Center which for whatever reason they can’t sell bonds right now. But regardless of the details, this is just bizarre. The writer more or less ends by saying, “We don’t really know what the hell is going on but we will get back to you.” Some of the items listed don’t sound like emergencies either, but what do I know?

First time I ever visited the Ford, this was my exact thought and it was a total let down (like being a Jets fan and seeing Aaron Rodgers get injured in the first minute of play.) Having lived in several large cities, this was the way it was done at the local arena.

The Leadership in Evansville has been misisng for many decades. They have no vision or have they attempted to develop the area.
