NIL has ruined the college experience for many of the alumni, fans, parents, and the kids involved. An example?.... It seems to be an avenue for a former beloved ex-player to presumably turn on his alma mater, while pitting its dedicated fan base against him.

Its really tough to see a future play out for UE basketball that includes enough NIL funds to challenge for a MVC title in the current format. Football and the QBs transferring around getting 7-figure deals is one thing but mid-level competitiveness in basketball feels close to impossible. Will Bailey or Humrichous make 150k from another school after big years this year for us? Probably. Can we match it? Probably not. Feels like the era of mid-levels moving back to being the minor leagues for the big schools is upon us unless the rules change.

Marcus locked his Twitter account and made it private. That’s why the tweet is no longer visible.

I’m not sure of the way out of this NIL mess they’ve created. Schools should in no way be allowed to be directly involved in NIL collectives. The NCAA started all this by refusing to pay a flat stipend to everyone. The kids basically have full time jobs that make the NCAA huge $$. I don’t know how you get the cat back into the bag.

The next step in NIL is sharing TV revs with players and those $ are really big (for the major programs).

Marcus locked his Twitter account and made it private. That’s why the tweet is no longer visible. That’s interesting. On top of looking to cause turmoil in the UE program, singling out individual players like that and putting a price tag on them is just tacky. He apparently has no interest in coaching anywhere again, and looks like he (rightly) got a lot of flak for that tweet. Or maybe it was something else…

Unfortunately schools have to be involved with NIL. Big Boosters were recruiting players for programs the coaches didn’t want. The new NIL deal allows coaches to recruit (pay) the players they want. Amateurism is over as we know it. So maybe the bigger question (don’t shoot the messenger) is, should institutions whose purpose is higher learning, be involved with professional sports?

As long as the $ makes sense, they will. But as the cost to participate continues to go up, it will definitely be interesting to see how many continue to think the $s make sense. I highly doubt there will be 362 division 1 basketball teams in 10 years.

There is going to be a tipping point in all of this. It may be nothing more than the P5 breaking away and taking all the money, but there will be a tipping point. Somewhere along the line, regular students who are driving beaters to work 2 jobs while still loading up on debt to get the same degree the million dollar jock, tooling around campus in a new sports car is getting handed to them without ever opening a book, will simply have had enough.

Especially when a donors money that was going to fund a new academic building is now being donated to a NIL collective.

Marcus locked his Twitter account and made it private. That’s why the tweet is no longer visible. I'll be happy to not hear from him anymore, but all this really means is that he can promote away our best players under the radar. Wilson is still on a mission. You can take that to the bank.
