Still early but from what I have seen, Joshua Hughes is the real deal. I would say that he is as good or better than Egidijius as a freshman and the Big E lead the nation in rebounding and double doubles his senior year, so that is saying a lot. Josh can also step out and hit the three. Thoughts? Agree/disagree. Time will tell (as always). Josh is as talented Big the league has seen since the Lefty from Loyola. As excited as I am about a 6’7” PG and a high motor scoring guard; I see Josh as a guy who can truly move the needle for us. If he had signed at UNI, the hype would be sky high for him. Count me as happy that he’s a little under the radar.

I really like all I have seen from all the new guys thus far. Hughes has good hands, better shooter than most vs other bigs we have had the last 20-30 years at this stage so for sure optimistic. I also like what I saw when it comes to some passing and higher BB IQ than we have seen for quite some time out of several new guys. I was out of town for the exhibition game and only saw part of the first regular season game but I liked what I saw and not everyone that is a newcomer played so looking forward to the Ball State game. I am trying to avoid getting too excited too soon because of how quick and tough the fall has been over many years of being a die hard Aces fan.
We have all suffered through many horrible seasons, coaching turnover and been at the lowest we can get in terms of won/loss regard and negative press (thanks Walter and Spencer) so it is nice to see some light at the end of this long, dark tunnel we have been in for over 20 years with no NIT or NCAA bids. We need more than one player to take us to new heights, we need a handful like we had during Crews runs in the late 80s and 90s. One guy never did it all and made it to post season by himself to any post season bids. Most recently in 2016 which was the closest we came we had Wing, DJ, Mislav, Gideous and of course Blake. Back in the late 80s and 90s we had Haffner, Simmons, Hill, Godfried, Shreffler, Elkins, James, Jackson and many others I could continue to list. So, we need a group of guys who can play 40 minutes at both ends of the floor and as deep a bench as we can get in case of injuries or foul trouble to get back to post season play and top 1-2-3 finishes in The Valley. I see us averaging over 6,000 fans a game when we get back to the level we know we can get to.
Go Aces !

Have spoken with Josh a few times and he is a great guy. He is excited about bringing UE back to the level we once were and having more fans in the seats.

What is everyone's opinion on the Day kid.Mine is I don't see him getting a whole lot of playing time this year but I think he is more of a inside player than Josh and Toumi.

I would agree - he's raw but down the road he might be able to develop into a solid center - he does have a good body for it. I would say he's more of a classic center - back to the basket maybe pop up for a mid range jump shot or two but mostly around the rim. Where the Josh is a mid post - and driving type guy more in the mold of Dirk Nowitzki. I think if Josh can work on it he could have an unstoppable mid-range fadeaway like Dirk had because he has an extremely high release on his shot and very long arms.

In the preseason instagram interviews when they asked players who their game most resembled, I think Josh’s answer was Marc Gasol, and I think that is a great comparison for his skill set. He reminds me of late career Marc when he still had an elite post game but was forced to adapt and add outside shooting for the modern NBA.

At minimum he gets an education and the team has a big bruising 5 to play on the scout team. At best he gets an education and he contributes on the court on game days. Win-win.

Hopefully he develops into a serviceable big. Seems like he could be a Dainius Chatkevicius type player eventually.

How many games can a player play and keep his redshirt? four games Removing medical redshirts and allowing an easy-to-understand limit of “no more than four games played” in order to maintain a redshirt. Division II approved a similar redshirt rule before the 2023
Found this online. Pretty sure this is accurate.

I know football for sure has the 4 game rule, so I don’t see why the NCAA would allow football players to play 40% of their season and redshirt and not allow a basketball player to play 10% and redshirt, but the NCAA isn’t known for their strong reasoning skills usually. Really makes you wonder why Gui Tesch didn’t see the court in the UHSP game though….

Division II approved a similar redshirt rule before the 2023 Found this online. Pretty sure this is accurate. This is not the official ncaa site for redshirt rules but it is from a couple of weeks ago right before the season started: Demystifying the Redshirt in College Basketball www.33rdsquare.com/demystifying-the-redshirt-in-college-basketball/The really interesting thing to me about this article (which I don’t know the validity of) is that it said that the number of games that a player can play can vary slightly by conference but that it likely falls into two criteria: 1. Four games; or 2. 30% of the schedule. Note: 30% of a 31 game schedule is 9.3 games. That is a big difference between four games. So to me it has to be one of the other unless one is for a medical redshirt (like an injury) and one is just a straight up redshirt. So maybe it is four games unless you get hurt and then it is 30% of the schedule. Not 100% sure. Note: Preseason and exhibition games don’t count. That is a player can still redshirt if he plays in those preseason games and only regular season games count for the criteria above. Maybe somebody on the board can clarify further what the 2023 NCAA/MVC redshirt rules are for this year.
