I see Level 13 believes in turning their humans into "investable brands." There is nothing more insulting than marketing departments.

I am happy to be a mid-major and not have to deal with all these high profile players. Going to be interesting to see how this NIL, pay to play, social media, etc stuff with high profile players pans out in the next 10 yrs.
I believe the model for teams like us is to get a couple 3-star guys who will be around all 4 years and build a cohesive unit that pops when they are Jrs/Srs. Play a style of ball that is fun to watch and go to the tournament every 4-5 years would keep me satisfied. I loved watching DJ, Colt, Peter van Tongren, Mockevicius (spelling?) --- and simply don't care to follow a team with one/two and done players.
Guys like Joey Hart can choose a school like UE and get substantial playing time while having fun ---- or get the NIL $ at UK to ride the bench and watch a lot of high profile types like Bol come in for 1-2 yrs and get all the attention.
Are Topps trading cards still a thing?

I’m more interested in finding out the market for what pencils as a “defensive minded journeyman” - is in the trading card game
(And whatever it is: clearly isn’t decided by what college he plays at…… so again, the recruiting saga is umm… interesting.)

Hopefully we can lay the Manute Bol…..I mean John Bol thread to rest. Good luck John. He’s joining OTE for his senior year while maintaining his college eligibility, so pretty unlikely this will be the end of this thread.

So does the enormous fan base at OTE plan to have a season ticket drive, or is playing an empty gym with guys editing highlight films sufficient? Also, do they have 16 "cheerleaders" under the basket going 'wooooooooo!" and shaking their poms in unison? If you can't get the lunch, go straight for the pie and ice cream.

Sorry, I'm old. What does this mean. Basically he’s playing against players that are likely future NBA players, but he’s allowed to maintain his college eligibility if he chooses as there’s two options, explained in the article. theconversation.com/overtime-elite-a-private-school-basketball-league-and-media-conglomerate-just-sent-two-players-to-the-nba-205551#:~:text=Founded%20in%202021%2C%20Overtime%20Elite,talents%2C%20offering%20them%20two%20options. …Founded in 2021, Overtime Elite – often called OTE – functions as an accredited private high school, basketball league and media conglomerate. It allows its student-athletes to monetize their talents, offering them two options. They can accept a $100,000 minimum salary from the school, which means they must forgo NCAA eligibility. Or they can remain amateurs so they can play in college, with the organization offering scholarships to help them pay their college tuition. OTE also acts as an arm of a media company, Overtime Sports Inc., that provides film crews to help players burnish their personal brands…

The only two non-accredited high schools were the one that DeAndre Williams attended ....
and the School of Hard Knox.

As much as it is tempting to trash the entire John Bol saga, there is some educational value in seeing the ins and outs of recruiting in the NIL era.
Just reading about the options a player has when he joins a team like OTE is clarification that elite players are “amateurs” in name only.
The complexity of NCAA/NBA basketball, by comparison, seems so much more complicated than MLB. where a kid’s progress to the bigs is through a minor league system. A player is either a pro out of HS or he’s going to play college ball. Maybe the whole process will become a lot less murky over time.
Meanwhile, it is good that John has someone like Marcus to help him navigate through the process. Just navigating the legalities, opportunities, and potential pitfalls would be a full-time job, and without a mentor, a lot of these kids have to rely on “agents”, some of whom are real sleezeballs.

This is pretty important point. The sleaze will try to game the process, the coaches will soon learn who to trust and the kids who sign on with an agent (or mentor or role model) will figure it out soon enough that credibility is as important as talent. We've seen enough of that already and if the mid-majors are smart, they will get the word around -- these are the guys we don't deal with.
