Wonder if there is a previous connection between Coach Ragland and Coach Swanson?
If they could recruit Julius Mims from North Idaho to come to UE now, that could be a coup. He is a 6'9" uber-athletic Freshman who is also a collegiate high jumper who can high jump about 7'0"....now that UE has track and field, maybe there could be mutual interest. He was first team all conference as a Freshman and seems like a great kid.

Interesting that Ragland is the only one of our coaches who was currently coaching D1 men, and the only one actively recruiting, at least men’s players. You could make a case for a more experienced lead assistant, but Marcus and Craig both are smart with good and varied experience, so a younger assistant makes sense too. I don’t know anything about Swanson but looking for great things from this staff!

I was very underwhelmed with the hire at first, but after reading UEs press release and thinking it over further, I think having a successful JUCO coach could help recruiting in todays environment. JUCOs are constantly reloading & retooling their roster which is good experience to have in the transfer portal world.

Doesn't sound too impressive. In Rags we trust.

Just a quick look, he has a son Jayce I believe, point guard for a great looking 15 year old AAU team. He has another son as well maybe younger. He has been successful every where he has coached.

This was an interesting choice. Generally you don’t hear much about the assistant coach occupying this position on the team. It doesn’t seem like his résumé offers the JUCO connections needed to improve UE’s recruiting from these ranks. Maybe Rags just ran out of budget money.

If he brings Mims, a very good JUCO, and teammate DeWitt, who was all-region 2nd team, we might fill a couple of our needs in one shot. N. Idaho has a really good season last year. I also don’t see a connection that might have lured Swanson to UE. Maybe he replied to a Hoopdirt job posting. Maybe Snow knows him, or has a connection.

Quote from Rags on GoPurplesAces
"I have known George for over 15 years. With my staff, I wanted to surround myself with guys that I know and trust who are high in character and work hard. "G" is a tireless recruiter and proven winner," Ragland said. "He has been a part of numerous championship teams and helped move along countless players to the 4-year level. George has been committed to graduating his student athletes and will be instrumental in molding our players academically, socially and athletically. I'm excited to welcome "G" and his family to Evansville."
Just follow the links up above and all guessing aside you will find the answer!

I imagine that his job will be to hit the high schools, and JUCO programs, since he has experience in that field. Rags lost no time in filling out his staff, and getting a couple of nice recruits. I think we are going to like what we see in the future.

Sorry about that. Verbal Commits says that DeWitt signed with IUPUI in late 2021.

Maybe Rags just ran out of budget money. I think you hit the nail on the head with this one.

Doesn't sound too impressive. In Rags we trust. I’m guessing UE spent the lion share of the staff budget on Wilson and Snow. Most MVC teams don’t have 3 high paid assistant coaches. I thought he seems like a good fit for UE’s third assistant, he has a lot of high school and JUCO experience that will help with recruiting. With Marcus I’m sure we had to pay more than his coaching resume would suggest, but his value is going to be in his passion for program and his connections with recruits and coaches and his ability to relate to the young guys. Snow has a great resume that includes head coaching and athletic director experience. Him being a tri-state local and former UE star who has passion for the program is another bonus. I love that Ragland took a little bit different than the norm approach in filling out his staff. UE needs to be out of the box somewhat to bring the basketball program back to life. Time will tell but the Ziggy and Ragland era is off to a roaring start in my opinion, which the optimism is much needed for this beat down fan base.

I think there's another asst incoming You can only have 3 assistants that are allowed to coach in game & recruit off campus. We’ve filled all 3 of those spots. We still have an opening for DOBO that will likely be filled soon. Would be a great spot for DJ Balentine if hes interested in leaving IU Kokomo. We could also still hire a “special asssitant to the HC” but they can’t recruit or coach in games/practices. They are limited to scouting & helping coaches prepare game plans, and I doubt we have the budget laying around to hire someone to do that.
