Can't say I blame him,but I don't believe he will go to a conference that is rated higher than the MVC. Do you really believe that part of the reason Newton is leaving is trying to get into a "better conference"?

Right now, this feels so similar to the final two years of Marty Simmons's tenure...just worse. Marty couldn't give away a scholarship, and neither can Lickliter. Further, with our present team, we are now in a situation where our top recruiter just left. I have never seen the likes of this. Makes you wonder where are all our players gong to come from for next season. We already know the two players who did commit had no other division 1 offers. Not at all am I trying to be "Debbie Downer" but this is just looking insane to me. How low do you have to get to know a radical change is needed....like hiring a new head coach.

That’s my position. Please, let’s stay away from Evansville for our next HC selection is all that I ask.

Do you really believe that part of the reason Newton is leaving is trying to get into a "better conference"? Exactly. He's looking to get to a better program. And he and Shamar leaving aren't even your typical transfers. They put in 4 full seasons at UE. They could have been honored on Senior Day had they desired to. So technically, they aren't leaving early. Like Evan and Noah, they've been granted an extra season due to covid. But like many others, they are choosing to play their extra covid season elsewhere. I heard during an NCAA tournament broadcast last week that there were something like 264 "super seniors" this season, guys who chose to play a 5th season. Only 30 chose to do so at the same school. Players choose a school, not a conference. If somebody for example chooses the University of Portland, it's because they like the school or the coach, or both. Nobody is going to Portland though because they're in the same league as Gonzaga. The next player who transfers to a conference will be the first one.

I think part of this is the 'other side of the mountain' that John Hall pursued and perhaps many others. A fresh school, maybe looking for a partner for life, or just wanting to see how society works in Portland (Maine or Oregon.) So not all of it is that simple. If Newton is after a master's (and believe he is) then the program he wants could be better someplace else. After basketball, there is life outside the gym. I guess I attach some importance to the player being unhappy with 24 losses and wishing he could be livin' large in Jersey City this weekend. Everyone would love to be a Peacock today. What league are they in?

There are 100 programs where Newton could fit in. If brother Tristan likes Schwartz from Tennessee as new HC @ ECU, that’s a distinct possibility.
I wish we could keep him, because he is the kind of 5th year player you can build around, vs. Noah and Evan, who were always marginal D1 guys.
Newton will always be remembered as a warrior Ace. Good stats, a fine leader, and never afraid to accumulate a few floor burns. Who couldn’t use a 5th year transfer like that?

If they care about academics and getting additional degrees, this could be as simple as that. UEs master programs are severely lacking. There’s only 3 degrees that could be completed while also playing basketball. Masters of Health Admin., Masters of Public Health, and Masters of Leadership.
They play the commercials for the Masters of Leadership on the Jumbotrons at games and I’m still not sure what the hell a “leadership” degree is.
So if you’re not looking for a career in healthcare and you’ve already acquired leadership skills from your basketball career, you’d probly want to look at spending that 5th year elsewhere pursuing a different degree.
That being said, if we were on the cusp of winning The Valley next season, I’m sure both Jawuan and Shamar would be happily enrolled in the leadership program.

Nothing like pushing your "Leadership Degree" on the jumbotron while the leader of your men's basketball program is dozing off during a 25 point beatdown.

I have mentioned names in other threads already, I have seen basketball coaches hired well into the summer. I don't lose sight of this while we as Aces fans continue to wait on what the verdict will be concerning Coach Lickliter. Obviously, the sooner the better.

Won’t be at ECU if they play together.

Tristen was a real good fit for ECU. I see more harm than not when I see a player jump from one school where they had success.

Purely speculation, but I would think him and Jawuan would be looking to move to a lower league where they could be all conference caliber players and make a run at the tournament. Texas Southern and the SWAC seem like a great fit for that goal.

Tristan was 2nd team all-AAC. IMHO. he won’t be going to the SWAC. Both Newtons have the skills to contribute anywhere they choose to go, but I could see them landing together at SMU, Texas Tech, New Mexico, maybe Oklahoma….virtually any team that needs an almost sure starter (T) and a guy who can either start or come off the bench (J). If their parents still live in the El Paso area, I think there could be a motivation for them to sign with a school close enough so parents can see them play together on a regular basis.
If I were a D1:coach, I’d take them both in a heartbeat. We know Jawaun is a warrior, and Tristan is very talented. Wisconsin, Xavier, Creighton, Colorado? Sure. Maybe not UNC, Kansas, or Duke for playing time considerations, but plenty of schools would like to put the ball in Tristan’s hands. The fit could even be better on a team that shares the ball.

I knew Tristan was a solid player, but I didnt realize he was already an All AAC caliber player. I’ll be interested to see where they end up.

The problem for the incoming school, if both transfer to the same school, is that teams are back to giving out 13 scholarships this season. The really need to find a school that needs an infusion of players.
