Looks like the bullpen blew a good outing by Shane Gray. They were up 3-2 going into the eight inning where Southern Illinois scored eight runs in the eight. Down 10-3 now. SIU left the bases loaded so it could have been worse. Barring a big comeback this will put them back under .500 as they are currently 14-14.
They play again at 2 pm tomorrow (Saturday) at 1 pm on Sunday.

It's early yet, so maybe the baseball team can reverse that trend as the season progresses, but you hate to lose when your best pitcher pitches.

Aces beat SIU 6-2 today which I hope is a good sign we are going to be relevant in the baseball race this year.

Aces lose 14-5 today. Seems like they have some bullpen issues as they gave up six runs in fifth and ninth in what otherwise was a pretty close game. So they are now one game under .500 overall (15-16) and in conference play (1-2).

Tanner Craig tied the all-time UE career home run record with his 40th to put UE up 4-0.
Some great defensive plays as well by the Aces especially last night. Here was one of them by third basemen Brent Widder:

Aces win at Butler 11-1. Sophomore Donovan Schultz with a two hitter and four players with multi-hit games and all four had a home run: Shallenberge, Craig, Berkey, and Hug). Widder with the other hit. By the way Shallenberge (junior right fielder) is batting over .400 now at .408. This is how UE should be dealing with "The Butler Way"..by smashing the Bulldogs.

The baseball team continues to be very competitive. Note: They play two against the Missouri State Bears today on the road at 1 and 4 pm. Both games are on ESPN3. MVC baseball standingsNote: The MVC season is still early but in their 2-2 conference record they have gone 1-2 against second place SIU and had a hard fought 6-4 win against a 0-4 Missouri State team. But the other three loses for MSU were to #16 Dallas Baptist and two of those games were by one run. So there are no easy games in the valley especially in baseball.

Aces break open a close game to take the second game of the series. Nick Smith with a solid 6 1/3 innings allowing only one run and Drew Dominick closes it out the last 2 1/3 innings. They go for the sweep in a few minutes.

Aces sweep the series with MSU winning game three 14-2. Caleb Reinhardt allows one run in eight innings and Shane Harris finishes out the ninth. As someone mentioned this puts them in second place now in the MVC. Not sure if they can hang with DBU and first place Indiana State but they play a three-game series next weekend against Indiana State but first have a mid-week Wednesday game on the road at West Lafayette against the Purdue Boilermakers before heading to Terre Haute for the match up against the Sycamores. This team is definitely legit and should be in the top half of the league from what I am seeing. But likely DBU, ISU Blue and the Salukis are their main competitors for the top half of the league. I should note that none of the teams in this league are pushovers though. Missouri State and Valpo are likely the worst teams but still a lot of conference games left. Game 3 stats

Should be a great series next weekend in TH v. the Sycs. Aces match up very well. Once ISU get's past their 1st game starter, quality drops FAST. NO viable southpaws on their staff. This year, Hannah's has loosened his grasp on a MLB-type offensive game, mostly because of the lack of a dependable long ball hitter and more speed in the lineup. Be sure and brush up on your Spanish!

Will be an interesting weekend as the top 4 teams play one another. UE @ Trees, and SIU @dbu.
If any one of these teams slip up, it could potentially drop them to 6th or even 7th depending on what the other teams do. A good weekend if UE can take 2. A catastrophic weekend if they get swept.

I agree with this. The odds probably say we win one and ISU wins two but that is why they play the games. This seems to be a scrappy team. I'm guessing how good of pitching we have versus how good their pitchers are will probably be well over 50% of the equation on our success of pulling two or more games out. Not sure how good their pitching is but sure it must be pretty good to be in first place. Our pitching has been good for the most part but certainly not dominant especially against the better teams. Looking forward to see how they compete against the better MVC teams. Go Aces!!!
