Remember seeing a lot of games on that field, and it truly was a field. Remember one in particular was when Gene Stephenson brought the Shockers in when they were probably ranked in the top 10. By some miracle, and rather shoddy play by the Shockers, we scored 2 or 3 runs in the middle part of the game to take a lead. I was sitting on the bottom row of the bleachers, about 3/4 of the way up the third base line. As Gene made his way to the coaching box in the next inning he walked right in front of me about 10-15 feet away. I spoke up so he could hear, and said "over rated". He looked at me, and gave me half azz smile, and went on. I think the Shockers finally won the game, but for one brief moment, I think I got under his skin. For a number of reasons, both baseball, and basketball I never could stand the Shockers.

As ATP mentioned in the opening comments of this thread their first four games are brutal - three games against #10 NC State this weekend and then they play #3 Vanderbilt Wednesday.
You have to give it to them from not backing down from a challenge; with that said I hope that they don’t lose another game by two touchdowns this year.

Lose 6-4. Given that the Wolf Pack likely has (a.) more top players and (b.) a head start, it is important to know that these games only help the hitters. You want to face the best and the ACC is some of the best.
The attendance is interesting. Those are very acceptable crowds, although at this time of year, if you like baseball, this is where you get it.

My bros in law played 2B for the Aces during the "sandlot era" (late 60's-early 70's). Collegiate baseball has grown considerably since then, when the PLAYERS drove their own cars to Florida and scheduled a few unsanctioned "Spring Training" games against players from mixed schools.
ISU wasn't much different, playing their home games and practicing on a TH Babe Ruth League diamond called Valle Field, where they'd take a daily bus to practice. Not until Bob Warn arrived in '74 did they initialize on-campus plans.

The baseball team lost 9-0 to #3/#5 Vanderbilt and only got one hit.
Note: The baseball team has played all four games against teams rated in the top 10. So this may not be as bad a loss as you would think and hopefully will prepare them for later in the season for conference play.

Vandy most likely would not finish last in a low-level professional league. They consistently churn out top draft picks and were most likely an organized roster the day after they lost in Omaha. The only bummer there was that Kumar Rocker, their top pitcher who was supposed to be the next Pedro, mysteriously fizzled in the July draft. I don't think UE expected to win many or any of these games. The players look forward to facing this sort of competition. They see development ahead of success. Getting hits off of an All-American doesn't mean you own him. But no hitter ever said he didn't relish the at-bat.

Nothing mysterious about Rocker, he had a questionable physical according to multiple sources. Mets offered him an underslot bonus as a result, and he declined thinking he could do better in the draft this year. Remains to be seen if he can actually improve his draft stock, but the talent is unquestionably there if he remains healthy.

Rocker's best chance is if he can find some innings in indy ball this summer. As for it being a mystery, his status unraveled pretty quickly after the medical report came in. Somebody will invite him to spring camp eventually.

Just curious if he is related to former MLB nut case pitcher John Rocker?

Just curious if he is related to former MLB nut case pitcher John Rocker? Without knowing the family personally, I am as close to 100% that they are not related, especially if you consider some of the controversial comments that John made a couple of decades ago. More info on Kumar Rocker here and John Rocker here.

The men's baseball team picked up their first win of the season with an 11-2 win over previously undefeated Dayton (who is 3-1 now). The Aces first four games were against two top 10 teams in NC State and Vanderbilt.
