3/11/1982 at the Mabee in Oral History, OK. Brad Leaf hit 1 of his first 12 shots. Bum! This was the highlight moment of the Aces under Walters, who was -- all in all -- quite underrated as a coach and recruiter. Bullock, Johnson and Turam all fouled out of this one. Aces played a good 2nd half. They needed to play the other one, however. Hank Raymonds' Marquetters lost to Missouri in the finals, Missouri playing without Dru Smith, who had transferred to Evansville despite a paper shuffling scandal. UE was 23-6 with one 8-game win streak early in the season. Toughest games in a loss -- 72-65 at Kansas and 59-58 at Rosemont against No. 3 DePaul. De3Paul (Terry Cummings) was 26-2 and was upset in regional by Boston College. They were an independent. UE beat Loyola 3 times to secure the MW Cities title. Who mentioned Kenny Perry?

The Aces led most of that January game at Kansas, with the Jayhawks fortunate to get it into overtime. The Aces also had a letdown after beating Loyola on a Saturday night in Chicago to clinch the MCC regular season title with 2 games left. They came home and lost 2 nights later to a Detroit team they had beaten on the road earlier. And as mentioned, the one point loss at DePaul, who would get a #1 seed for the 3rd year in a row, and lose their first game for the 3rd year in a row. That Aces team was so much fun to watch, and deserved better than the #10 seed they got. The Pepperdine team UE beat in Malibu (despite the technical on our RADIO guy) got a #7 seed.

The mention of the 1982 NCAA tournament game against Marquette reminded me of when I was really young, and the Warriors came here for the Holiday Tourney in December, 1965. The Aces were two time defending national college division champions and still had Larry Humes, Sam Watkins and Herb Williams as returning starters from the undefeated team. Howard Pratt, Jerry Mattingly, Woody Gordon and Ron Johnson were just some of the others on that team. Before a big and loud Stadium crowd, with a 9:00 start time 😁, (there was a consolation game at 7:00), the Aces beat Marquette in the title game. I still remember Al McGuire taking off his suit coat in disgust with the officiating and flinging it as far as he could. Needless to say, the crowd was really into it from start to finish.

Dang, my freshman year. I went home for the holiday break.

Probably worth mentioning for the younger fans, that Kansas was not the Kansas program like today. They were 4-10 in the Big 8 that year and had an overall losing record.

For sure, Missouri was the hoss in the Big 8 those years. Beating a P-5 program was less of a surprise than it's been since ESPN managed the checkbook.
