There are several which are hard to pick from. Unfortunately, they all seem to have been prior to 2001.
I too was at the Haffner game that afternoon. One of the greatest performances I have ever seen. With that though, the one that cemented me for life was probably the first game I attended after the crash. It was a Saturday against Indiana State and Larry Bird. We played them to 4, and that was the year they ran to the NCAA Championship undefeated. I don't think it was the actual first game, but it seemed almost surreal they were back. I was 14 and it seems like yesterday in many ways.

I saw that game to, when ISU with Larry Bird came into town. You would have swore Bird had eyes in the back of his head the way he could pass. The crowd was electric and the Aces gave them a quite game. If you recall, the Aces back up center, played the game of his life. His name I believe was Barry Weston. He was a tall, slow footed, overweight center, who never had another good game after that one. He scored about 22 points that night, and stole the ball from half court and got the only dunk of his career.

Snippet from the Paducah Sun on 12-12 after UE beat Murray for their first win of the Walters era. Murray fell to 0-6 with this game.

This is kind of clunky (Feb 5 1970) KWC had opened with 13 wins in a row and hit a skid. Names here -- Mike Owens, Kae Moore, Bob Clayton, Jim McKissic, Roger Guthe (I don't remember much about him) Layne Holmes, Steve Welmer, Don Buse, John Wellemeyer ... Philly Textile won the title that year.

The Aces had a couple of moments in the late 60s against the St. Joseph's PA Hawks, who had something of a legendary reputation -- though diminished by this time. This clip shows the Aces were considered quite appealing to the Palestra crowd. Wow, on the same slate with Duke! (UE lost to SJ 95-84.) Duke was a national icon even then. Temple and SJ were in with Penn, LaSalle and Villanova as a cluster of 5 top programs. As well, Drexel, Philly Textile and Cheyney were all D-2 powers in those days. But wait ... there's more in the next clip. To the admins: If these clips are a problem in any way, please tell me. This is taking me some time to find this stuff and I owe most of it to my memory. Memory? I forget what that is. This is Jan. 1969. Temple beat Duke in this game 73-69.

THIS is the game i remember that seems to have been forgotten. A year later, SJ comes to Roberts and the last 1 second of the game is all you need to know. December 1969.

Roger Guth was from Dale, IN. Before Heritage Hills opened in the early 1970's, the towns of Dale (Golden Aces) and Chrisney (Wildcats) had their own schools, and some pretty good basketball teams. I don't think either had enough students for football. Guth was in the same recruiting class as Mike Owens, Layne Holmes, Kae Moore, and Rex Morgan. Their freshman season, when freshmen didn't play varsity, they played and defeated the IU freshman team before the Aces game against Valpo. There was already a near capacity crowd for the freshman game. Morgan transferred to Jacksonville after their freshman year, and played on their 1970 NCAA runner up team that had Artis Gilmore and Pembrook Burroughs, an unheard of at that time pair of 7 footers playing together, as well as Evansville Harrison stars Greg Nelson and Vaughn Wedeking. Holmes unfortunately was killed in 1973. Moore was an assistant coach for Arad McCutchan for one season, 1973-74. As for the Kentucky Wesleyan game from 1970 that albothepurple has shown in the newspaper clipping, what I remember from that game, and I was just 14 then, was a huge fight breaking out between the two student sections. There was a police officer, Bill Jones, who stood in the Stadium tunnel at Aces games, a nice guy to talk to, but could be an intimidating force if he had to, a gentle giant you might say. He was in the middle of that brawl, which could have gotten really ugly. Not sure of the particulars, but I think it had something to do with an old Civil War cannon that was the prize then that the two schools played for, like IU-Purdue playing for the Ole Oaken Bucket in football. Not sure, but I believe they stopped bringing the cannon to Aces-Wesleyan games after that because of that fight. That rivalry was intense. Perhaps someone else who was there that night might recall what started the brawl. My best guess was a lot of testosterone and even more alcohol. Needless to say, there was a rather large and vocal student support then.

As for Dale having football ... correct me but the Pocket Conference had some 8-man programs in the day. That would have included Fort Branch and Owensville, Oakland City, a few others up the road. Yes, now I remember Guth. Kae Moore was from New Harmony. I saw him play a game against Haubstadt and he was a man-child as a high school player.

I love the history and clips. I am wondering if this should be moved to the History and Memories section?

I just started looking for this stuff and it's easier to find once I get my bearings on dates. If you move it, fine. Found this clip of a 70 game between UE and Balldo State. For folks who never saw Welmer play, the big guy was very agile against players not quite as hefty. No. 13. Buse is No. 10. I think 24 is McKissic, right? Clayton is 40, I m fairly sure. Wellemeyer is 53. Not sure who 30 is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiN8AYZSHPY

The first Aces game for me, 12-4-65 ... home against Iowa, still on a 35-game streak. Iowa with George Peeples and Chris Pervall, ended the streak. 80-73. We were devastated. De-vah-stat-ed. I remember thinking, we should be able to beat some nothing team from Owensboro. Aces in this box Humes, Watkins, Williams ... all returners. Howard Pratt, 6-7 guy from Shoals. Ron Johnson Rick Kingston Woody Gordon Darrell Adams
