Aces lead 3-2 in bottom of 6th.
Deverman has had another strong outing. Hopefully, Wes is ready to turn to the bullpen early.

2 hits for SIU to lead off the 7th. Should be time to go the pen - job well done by Deverman.

Yeah, that was a tough one. Deverman maybe went an inning too long again. Hansmann looked real good until he didn't.

we simply don't have enough pitching at this point. It seems like Wes has been leaving pitchers in until they completely blow up. But, again, I don't think we have had anyone show consistency to have confidence in.
To quote the great Lee Elia "it is an unfortunate situation."

Deverman and Reed are the future of the staff, provided some "portal" doesn't scout them off to LSU. But both of them are lefties, which is nice to a point. I think Macauley is going to be better. All these guys have good innings and all of them have bad innings. Hansmann looked unhittable in the 8th. He needed one more popup and we would be saying what a great win it was. (sigh) All that the case, UE is still showing signs of improvement up and down the lineup. Even Wilkey, who is not a good hitter, gets good AB's.

Squeezed out 11-10 win in 10 innings to take the series 2-1. Aces pitchers can't stand prosperity. This could have been a sweep. The Mangy Carbondales are a tough team. Schultz had a good start and may be righting the ship. Just too many giveaway innings for this team. But the hitting is still solid. I think we will be OK. Top of 10th, 2 outs and Nick Smith grooves a pitch right down the middle on an 0-2 count to Cole Christman (.600 SLG%) for a dinger to make it 9-8 SIU. I just don't get how an experienced guy makes that pitch. Throw the ball in the dirt or outside.
Luckily the Aces come up with 3 in the bottom half of the inning for the win. If we could close out games better we would be 5-1 in conference, instead of 2-4.

If we could close out games better we would be 5-1 in conference, instead of 2-4. Too often, I see non-competitive pitches on 0-2, which is the pro version of "Let the hitter know he has 2 strikes and we will get back to you in the count." I agree that an 0-2 should not be a high-impact pitch, and it can't be in Grooveland. The 0-2 is sometimes the hitter's friend because he either hits a mistake or conveniently lays off a garbage pitch. (The legendary 2-strike hitter is not a myth.) Aces just seem to be able to play well enough to give their pitching a chance to make it uncomfortable. That's walking the razor. Smith isn't the staff ace now for no reason, but UE evidently isn't going to explain that -- if they can. I once thought Nick was a borderline 5th round draft pick. I heard he had surgery, though I learned nothing else. Pitchers are the first ones to fall in the Battle for Omaha.

I get your point, maybe Smith could of gone with high-heat above the shoulders instead of grooveland. The positive side of Smith struggling is that some younger arms are getting experience. I simply hope that the pitching comes around this month and coach has the team running on all cylinders going into the MVC tourney.

The MVC tourney is our only hope to salvage this season after such a poor start. We could probably win the rest of our regular season games and still come up short so we will have to right the ship and win the tournament to get into post season play. Fortunately for us we have the tournament at home so we can do it. Lets just get to playing better baseball and get the pitching dialed in so we can be on a roll when we get to May.
Go Aces !

Oh for sure, the conference tournament is the only way this team makes post season. Still, it's a 27-game schedule. Being 2-4 is not awful right now. It's a fun team to watch, regardless of any regional they might play. I just like watching good college baseball. And there are some really good players on these teams. It's better than the Frontier League for sure.
