Looks like the Aces play what could be their last game this afternoon against Illinois State at 2:30 pm. Evansville is the #12 seed. Illinois State is the #5 seed. The winner takes on #4 UNI tomorrow at 2:30 pm. If they survive that, they would likely take on #1 Drake at 1:30 pm Saturday. First three rounds are on ESPN+. The final is on ESPN2 on Sunday at 1 pm. We lost to Illinois State earlier in the year 78-50. A few links of note:

The one thing that is abundantly clear about this team is it needs outside shooters. Naveah is a force in the post, and Maggie can step out. I feel Tene is the PG for us going forward. Let's hope Avery Kelly and the other signees will be big contributors.

Down 46-28 at the half. Allowing Illinois State to shot 72% from the field, while we are being outrebounded 19-10 and getting outscored in the paint 26-8. Hartwig with ten points and Mason Striverson with seven points pace the Aces at the half.

They looked awfully tired. That's a consequence of running short handed the last few weeks. I do think the future is brighter than what we see now, assuming the bulk of the underclassmen stay. Naveah, Maggie, and Tene to be specific. Palomo and Gerke are good pieces as well. Sydney Bradley gave us some good minutes but I don't know how age fits the overall plan.

They looked awfully tired. That's a consequence of running short handed the last few weeks… I didn’t see the game but this was game one of what could have been four games in four days. How can you be tired on day one? Maybe they were tired because of the short rotation in this game? Either way, the season is over and hopefully the key players stay and the new recruits fill the voids where needed and things start to look up after some productive offseason workouts.

They've been short handed for several weeks. They've only had 7-8 players available. Injuries and illness decimated this team.

I don’t doubt that at all but it is still hard to imagine that a coach didn’t “rest” those 7-8 players to give them the best chance of playing up to four games in four days especially when their last game was five days ago. But I’m also sure what you are saying is likely true and the season took a toll on them. Either way, it is a moot point now and time to move onto next year.

The women rebound flatfooted, they make lob passes into the post that are telegraphed and they try to create offense inside the lane when it's clear the defense saw it coming and collapsed around it. They don't get loose balls, their inside offense is dismal and they don't have enough outside shooters. Other than that, they are fun to watch. I won't say this team is poorly coached, but it is poorly prepared. They are fortunate to having not hung up 30 losses this year. I won't say the softball team will be as fortunate.
Truthfully, they talk a nice recruiting game on their Twitter page. Maybe another year of experience for their two or three frosh will matter. But they need an aircraft carrier in the middle. Somebody who can make 8 layups, hit 10 free throws and stand her ground. This was the most uninspiring team I've seen.

With our poor shooting, defenses can collapse down on our inside players, but maybe one of our freshman recruits can help change that next year. Specifically talking about Camryn Runner who was named to the Indiana All Star team and averages close to 27ppg.
"Camryn Runner, Hamilton Heights (Evansville): The all-time leading scorer in Hamilton County, Runner averaged 26.9 points (51% FG, 36% 3FG, 91% FT), 5.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 4 steals for the two-time defending regional champion Huskies. The 5-9 guard accumulated 1,962 points and 288 steals in her career."

Dunno ... other than having passive interest in women's sports (yeah, I am a sexist!) it seems there are enough good players within an hour's drive of Evansville that they could find a few who could win some games. I thought Gerke, based on her video clips, could be an inside-out player and thrive in that conference. Perhaps she will. Thomas is decent-to-OK and I like Paloma/Hartwig a lot. Striversons are active on the court and seem intent on making things happen. Intent and outcomes = different results. But RSW came in with a plan to create a high-energy, full court game and while that might work with better ball handlers and shooters, it doesn't do s*** for defense. Transition, a term that means something far different than the "two-possession game" broadcasters use, depends on getting rebounds and running efficient routes. Most girls who come into college programs don't play that way because they don't have the teammates to pull it off. Fast-break basketball is a beautiful thing. Roaring downcourt and playing to contact is not. Top recruits in women's ball are generally the only good player on the team. They don't learn much. You aren't going to win without some outside snipers, but you have to get the ball first. Aces rebound like they forgot what the word means. I hate to be harsh about this. I get it about youth, roster turnover, maturity, injuries and all that -- but they aren't just losing 105-49 at Michigan State. They are losing 88-50 against teams like Bellarmine. Frankly, they need somebody who believes in women's sports (a lot of people claim they do) to step and throw some NIL bucks at these players. The UE situation is a lab experiment, right out there for people to see -- how to convert a national sport that has incredible trending power at the moment, into a Tri-State success story. The hardest part is actually believing that's possible.

I’ve been giving a lot of thought this year about the Lady Aces and I agree with the problems identified in the previous posts. I thought about many of those problems while watching all their games this year. I even watched the replay of the Illinois St game even though I already knew the result.
One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is most of our players have poor mechanics in their shooting. The only ones with good form is Maddie and Nevaeh. Most of the others just throw the ball at the rim. It’s not a problem with women players in general but the teams that take us to the barn look like they learned to shoot playing their whole life against boys.
Coach received either a 2 or 3 year extension on her contract so it’s not like she’s worried about her next job (or maybe she is). Maybe the Lady’s team history is a big worry with the top recruits she goes after and can’t make the sale. As stated she has a real strong recruit coming in and the Memorial girls come with a winning tradition. Anyway Coach will have at least 3 very solid players and maybe 4 to build on plus the Spring recruiting. She can either start putting winning teams on the floor or it’s time for a change.

But RSW came in with a plan to create a high-energy, full court game and while that might work with better ball handlers and shooters, it doesn't do s*** for defense. This. We simply don't play defense. I was scratching my head on why it appeared this program took a big step backwards from the progression of last year. Not really the case. Looking at last year, it was the tale of two halves. In conference, after beating Indiana State by 2 on February 1st, the team was 5-6. After that game, they proceeded to lose 10 of the last 11..with Abby and Anna. Admittedly, I believe there was some injuries. In those first 11 conference games last year, they gave up more than 80 exactly once, the first game with SIU. During those final 11 games, they gave up 80+ 6 times. To expand on that, the 2022-23 team averaged 62.8 while giving up 73.2. This year, we again averaged 62.8 but the opponents average increased to 81.1. You aren't going to win many games giving up 81 points a game..and you certainly aren't out-gunning anyone averaging 62. Her previous programs may have been able to outrun opponents, but she has never coached against MVC-level defenses. Simply put, for RSW or anyone for that matter to succeed here, they are going to have to develop defenses.

Yes, we need a better defense, but my opinion some better offensive strategies will help the defense: - need some girls that can shoot the ball; a pass first offense (less dribbling) trying to create open lanes instead of forcing contact on a drive where a lane does not exist; slower tempo (playing "fast" has resulted in 18 turnovers per game this year-- we simply don't have good enough ball handlers for the uptempo style); and on the defensive end better rebounding.
Shooting percentages have gone down the past 3 years from .380 -- .375 -- .361 and our 3 main "ball handlers" this year were at approx. .300 while taking 1/3 of the shots.

Even though my comments point to some deficiencies of the team, I am a big fan of all the players and coaches. They all put forth 100% effort in every game and despite the lack of wins to show for it, there was no quit in this team.
