Win OVC with only 1 loss, sweep the conference tournament and will be in the WNIT. Their coach calls the transition rule "outdated."
Snips from the Courier piece:
Top-seeded USI hit 10 3-pointers to roll past No. 3 University of Tennessee-Martin 81-53 on Saturday. It was the eighth time this year they put up 80 or more points.
USI (24-6) will not advance to the NCAA tournament but coach Rick Stein said the Eagles are "absolutely" going accept their automatic bid to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament for winning the regular season title.
The Eagles, who extended their winning streak to 10 straight, were dominant in the OVC, only losing once in 20 contests. On Saturday, it was Vanessa Shafford leading the way with 15 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists. Chloe Gannon (14), Triniti Ralston (14) and Meredith Raley (13) also finished in double figures scoring.
The WNIT’s 48-team field will be announced next Sunday night before it reveals the bracket the following day. First-round games will be played between March 20-22 — perhaps at Screaming Eagles Arena.

If I'm not mistaken, the NCAA doesn't run the WNIT. The men's NIT is run by the NCAA, so that would be why Bellarmine couldn't play in it 2 years ago.

Whoever runs it has obviously told the Screams they are in it. Stein didn't use any "if's" when he was quoted. I don't follow the women's game much, but I'd venture that all the first few dozen P-4 teams will be in the NCAA -- meaning, USI might have a better chance of advancing than we think. There are not 40 really good women's programs in the country.

I was at the game and USI is great at the fundamentals. In the landscape of women's college basketball at the mid-major level, a coach simply needs to recruit dexterous players with solid fundamentals, a few shooters and a big with good footwork -- and these players can all be found within 250 miles of campus. Then run a pass first offense with basic screening and blocking out, and the points will come. Let's hope UE figures this out.

I have always believed there was a .500 team lurking in any direction within a 2-hour drive of the city. You sell the campus, the education, the curriculum. These women aren't interested in the WNBA. They are interested in playing sports that gives them a degree in life.
